OP-1 Field vs OP-1 - Watch This Before You Buy

The new OP-1 field is quite the controversary. And in this video I want to talk about how the old and new OP1 differs. What's the sound of the new loudspeaker system? What does the new OP-1 field sound like? How is the build quality? Are there any issues. Watch this before you toss out €2k and find out if this is for you.

Let me know in the comments if you want to see more aspects of the OP-1 field on my channel.

Thanks for watching and subscribing!

The best thing the OP-1 field has done for the OG OP-1 is actually made it more affordable on the used market

My WISHLIST for OP-1 Field UPDATES (please fill in your own withlist too):

* Zero crossfade point when lift/drop (at least as an option.
* Pan sounds (synths) before recording onto a tape track -
Currently we can only "effectively" pan drum sounds. But would be great to be able to pan sounds on the tape-view (where you set the recording level = red meter). So you record a sound in a specific panned position. Pressing the orange knob could turn the orange knob into a pan-knob instead. Super easy to add and a great way to make use of the new push knob functionality. Yes, you can already pan sounds in the mix view, but that's panning the whole tracks, which is not the same. You might want to have one sound on the left and one sound on the right on ONE single track (T1 or whatever). ;)

* Stereo delay - also make more different delay types like you get on the Novation Summit. Lo-fi delays, BBD, ping pong etc.

* Lift more than 22 sec. Please give us the ability to lift more audio data, it's super helpful when creating larger arrangements and editing.

* Audio over bluetooth - Ability to send audio to wireless bluetooth headphones. I don't know if it's possible with the onboard low energy-circuit. You can send audio over usb-c cable directly to the iPhone though...which is super neat for mixing down tracks onto your phone. ;)

* undo / redo functionality (probably the hardest to implement of the above)

The most unexpected thing is the Field sounds better of course, but it also puts in contrast the special charm of the original OP-1 sounds. Very enlightening to hear them side by side like this, congratulations and thanks for making such a well organized video

Don't like to admit, but damn...the OP-1 Field sound beautiful!
I'm hooked, just on the 'Mother' reverb and the adaptation of revised sounds/soundscapes, which those two elements alone have turned my perspective on its head.

I think the best way I'd describe it, is if you want a more lo-fi feeling, go with the original, but if you want a more polished sound, go for the new one

Excellent demo! I wonder why TE didn’t bother to make a video like this. I also wonder why we’re still stuck with a mono delay on a $2000 device in 2022. Who is using mono delays and WHY? They’ve had 10 years to add a stereo delay and we still don’t have it? Thank you for mentioning the key getting stuck, it shows that the price is high because it’s artificially inflated, not because the workmanship is premium.

32 bit gives it so much more dynamic range and that's where all that punch and attack definition is coming from, it should also be noticeable on filter sweeps and stuff where you have evolving sounds because of the dynamic range. Very cool video! Thank you!

Despite your initial setup, it sounds like the levels are not matched. The Field is mixed louder in your comparison, so the sound has more punch. With different output levels, it's not always easy to tell if two sources are equal.

Thanks for the time and effort! I think I'll keep my OG OP1... The field is def a step up BUT the 2K price is insane...

it's just fantastic in my opinion, I would buy it without any doubt if I had the budget for it...I am never going to sell my original op-1 to buy the op-1 field, I just have to start saving for it

Great video Mattias, enjoy your doodling during the high reverb ( Mother) parts... nice sounds... I really want to spend some good time with my OP-1 Field now... it seems to me they took a really nice musical Swiss army knife and just took it to a whole new level.

Thank you for this! Teenage engineering sadly doesn't seem to understand that not everyone is tech savvy/knowledgeable in engineering lol. Bless you.

im a bit late but what is that mini synth in the background of 10:33 with the patch wires coming out?

Thanks for making this video! I notice in the gain comparisons section that the OP-1 (OG) level indicator is displaying just one dot.
This happens when the tape input knob is not turned up. The volume knob on the unit can be cranked to 11 but if the tape input is down, you won't get full volume out of the synth.
Regardless, I'm still stoked to get the Field after this kidney deal goes through.

That reverb…”It’s…uh…not really comparable”🤣🤣🤣. I love my original, but even hearing suggestions that the spring reverb has “character” are pretty hard to handle. It is, in a word, brutal, as is the speaker.

Nice demo. All of the new Field features are incredibly desirable to have in a portable, self contained production device. It comes down to cash, but this is on my wish list. Just being able to drop in high resolution stereo stems changes its scope.

Great video, wish I never saw it lol. Never thought there was anything lofi about the OP-1 but after hearing the Field i'm shocked.

Thanks for this side by side! I'm even more excited to get my hands on the field after this

I just find it so silly that if TE knocked the price down to 1K they’d probably sell x1000 the amount of units. Yes, smaller profit margin but tonnes more sold to offset that 🤷🏽‍♂️
