OP1 Field...a very honest review

3 months in and I sort of regret it. This is an honest review.
OK so it's a very rambling video looking at my thoughts on the OP1 Field, however I think most of the issues with it are more down to me (with my enjoying music making in general at the minute) rather than the OP1.
Oh and I'll try not mention the price.
My thoughts are very poorly put together and presented here.

What teenage engineering need to do is create a "pro" pocket operator PO33, i know there's the EP133 KO 2, but how cool would it be if they just took the genius of the po33, built it like an OP-1 with full metal case & buttons, added a crisp OLED screen, and upgraded it with stereo, giving it separate jacks for the sync and line in. I think it would be a tremendous sucess. I believe the PO33 is TE's magnum opus product, it would just make sense to offer a premium version.

I feel a little bit the same about it but I keep it for its versatility as even when I don’t use it standalone it is a very convenient Bluetooth midi controller and resampling device when combined with a daw. It can even be used for « mastering » a track

I bought the first OP-1, sold it, bought it again and second time sold it sooner. There's only one think I truly loved on it: The tape recorder feature. I'd buy it if TE made a TP-7 with screen that has the tape recorder mode in it, and faders from the TX-6.

The great thing is you tried it and now you can move on if you arent happy. Resale is still very strong for a used Field. In the grand scheme of things, we roll the dice on things were interested in, sometimes we lose a few coins in the process but its part of the game. Funny enough I just bought a Field and love it and have the K0-33 and don't like it that much lol. Thanks for sharing tho good luck!

My fear with this one is that I could no longer live in denial of the fact that I still buy toys in my 40’s!

Try the OP-Z! It took a bit to learn but once it clicks it’s great fun just like the PO’s

If you like the pocket operator you should go for the opz

Can you please explain to me why such a children's keyboard with rudimentary functions costs twice as much as an Akai MPC, which can do much more?

If it had a proper sequencer/song mode, quantizing, and some other minor things, I would absolutely buy it and keep it. It is such a cool device but I ended up returning it. I thought I would hate the keys, but they are actually awesome. If I had money to blow, I would buy it and learn it in and out just to sketch on. But having the mpc live 2, the maschine mk3, I just couldn’t justify it. My brain does not click with its workflow. But holy shit, its one of the most beautiful pieces of gear I ever held.

I love the OP-1’s versatility! I’m curious, how easy is it to use for a beginner in music production? Any tips for getting started with sampling?

So I was thinking about getting one as I regularly do 10 hour journeys, and often hear sounds I want to make music with. The truth is everyone keeps banging on about how the price is good value for what it has on it, and it does have a tonne of stuff on it, but the truth is the music you can produce with it all sounds so amerturish, and that's not down to your skill, it's down to the fact that it's a four track tape recorder, and no one is gonna sound good with that, not even top musicians, they all dump the stems into a propper DAW and work with it.

Bottom line this is great for creating audio sketches, but if you're not gonna then expand them it's not worth the money.

For portable sampling fun the Roland sp404 mkii is pretty hard to beat for bang for buck.
I mean you could get 4 for the price of this & not be scared to take it out & about 👍

I have og op-1 for the things I need it's good enough. Although if I want something I can edit and expand, I'll rather use a DAW

I wish they could port over all the wonderful things of the KO II workflow into the OP-1f. I know some people don't like it, but the sequencer is a vast improvement over any of the OP1's. I will say it's my favorite standalone synth I've ever owned. I've sampled Prophets, Oberheims, Moogs, Rhodes, Wurlis, a bit of everything. But yes, it's aggressively frustrating and it seems to be on purpose.

Hey I hope you use some good headphones and or a studio setup to play these instruments with. Their built in speakers will not bring a good experience.

Smh. I like it. I think it would be cool to travel with or flex for a performance.... but the Price is WILD!! 2K!!?? Nahh!!
I'd suggest $450-$550...$700 with custom skin.
Tbh. I'm plotting on a snatch and grab for one.Maybe steal a OP-Z ...
Lastly I agree.
