Alternate picking is more rhythmic, sweep is more vocal-alike and melodic. It depends on the expressive choice.

I don't like the sound of longer sweep picking parts but I do really like it in short speed burst parts so I guess my answer is 80ish percent alternate picking with 20ish percent sweep picking ? :D

They both sound so good but I lean toward more alternative picking and less sweeping. But the sweeps can greatly compliment all the other nice variables going on. (: hope you had a good birthday sensei !

Both had their charms, but there is something so raw about alternate picking.
Sweep picking is a skill for sure, but I feel at higher tempos you lose some of the tonal magic

Though one can exist without the other, I prefer to think of them as 2 seperate and great guitar techniques that when both used correctly, form an ultimate hyper mega cool godzilla awesome crazy fun guitar solo.

Apples and Oranges... I use mostly shred through alternate picking, but land on arpeggiated lines and upper chord extensions of triads on top of the primary chords... it's cool to superimpose and play "outside"...I'd be the first to admit that I have a tendency to get too shred happy, so I try to dial it back a bit and build the melody so I don't lose groove.

Sweeps are fun, alternate picking is where its at... but can't do either without actually practicing at that speed... "when the time is right" of course.

I've learned alot as a patron, but I also learned alot just liking and subscribing..

Sweeping for me, but that’s probably because I first heard it (or maybe noticed it) played in the early 70s by Jan Akkerman, who even today remains as my guitar hero!

In my humble opinion and I've been playing for probably over 40yrs to actually be a really good guitar player one needs to have a good grasp on all aspects of playing the guitar whether it's alternate picking, sweep picking. Hybrid picking etc. Good knowledge of pentatonic scales and modes. These professionals put lots of hours into their craft!
