When you attach the words "All" and "Stars" to a collection of Mario games, it gets people's attention. This is because of the original Super Mario All-Stars collection released for the Super Nintendo. I talk about why the game was so impactful and why it remains one of retro gaming's biggest treasures (as well as the best Mario compilation with "All-Stars" in it's name).

I still remember the day my mom and dad came home and had bought me this game. Great memories. I still play this to this day!

This is one of my most favorite SNES carts in existence. Super Mario All-Stars/Super Mario World is the pinnacle of retro gaming today. Thank you for another awesome review!!!

A little known secret... you can now play the original NES Mario1, Zelda and some other NES games on a SNES using Project Nested on any SNES Everdrive. The list of compatible games is still growing as Myself086 (the developer) continues to work on it.

A brilliant, complete homebrew version of Mario Land (Game Boy) has also been ported to the SNES with DS style graphics too and a recent update to the controls has fixed its previous flaws. Easily the best SNES game that never existed in terms of both graphics and playability.

I personally enjoy the 8-bit iterations of these games over the All-Star versions (although All-Stars is still fun to play). Giving them all a 16-bit update kind of consolidated their look and sound into more of a singular feel. I liked the striking visual and audio difference between the 3 NES Mario games, letting you feel like you were in a different universe entirely from a previous 8-bit Mario game. With All-Stars I always felt like I was in the same Mario universe, regardless of what game I was playing.

One thing of note is that SMB2 and SMB3 are also released on GBA with the all star graphics. But the original smb and lost levels (japan only) were released as original emulated titles on GBA, with world saves similar to the A start trick.

2:18 greatest save of all time. I always preferred the original 8 bit versions of the games but All Stars is still really well done.

The original Super Mario All Stars will always hold a special place for me because I played it long before I ever played the NES originals.

I remember receiving a Nintendo voucher in the mail for this game. I convinced my parents to write a check from my pending allowance and sure enough I pre-ordered it. That was an epic set of days when I got that cart to say the least.

Haha, based on the title, I thought you were going to talk about the Super Mario World + All Stars cart as being the best.

Super Mario Bros 2 USA is my favorite Mario game, not just in Allstars, but out of all of 'em. Really glad you mentioned that it started out as a Super Mario Bros prototype, that often doesn't get mentioned by people. The idea was that it would be all vertical levels, thus the vertical segments. One thing I would like to clear up from the video that while still a super lazy effort from Nintendo, Mario 3D Allstars did do a few things to optimize the games and aren't just roms thrown onto a cart.

I know a game that's undoubtedly better then SMAS. Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World is the perfect package, although you don't see the cartridge very often.

Super Mario Bros. 3 has to be my favorite but there is something to be said about how fantastic Super Mario Bros. 2 was. That's where Shy Guy, my favorite video game character, is from which makes me love it even more.

My first game on the Snes was Super Mario All-Star + Super Mario World. Still own the very same copy, and for me, is the crown jewel of my retro collection.

Mario bros 3 was my jam, and probably still my favorite 2D Mario. Possibly because I got my bed just after Mario 3 came out so I barely placed Mario 1, and a I didn't care for how different Mario 2 was. Awesome video as always bird.

I have this weird kind of guilt with all stars. I rented it when it first came out and was really disappointed by it. I guess in an age where I was expecting every snes game to be new and have cutting edge graphics, I just pushed it aside. Funny that it took about 30 years for me to appreciate this cart for how amazing it is.
Mario 3 is my fav

I remember playing 2 on my cousin's NES and thought it was so much fun to pull up vegetables (and Goombas) and throw them at enemies. I had 1 on my NES and played 3 later but it was just a regular ol' Mario game. 2 was my favorite.

As much as I was excited for 3D All-Stars to replay my favorite Mario game (Sunshine), that quickly evaporated once I learned it was $60 for non-remastered emulated ports. And for a limited time, the audacity! I'm completely okay with never owning that set if it drops off the face of the earth tomorrow.

All-Stars sort of robs the originals of their uniqueness a bit with its more homogenized sound and art style but it's still a really cool package that I love on its own merits, especially with the inclusion of save files. As a new way to play old games it's pretty cool and there weren't really any other remakes like this at the time.

The 3D All-Stars should have at least had a Mario 64 remake.

I think rather than releasing the same game on the Wii, Nintendo should have titled it "Mario All-Stars 2" and include remakes of the Gameboy Mario Land series, Mario 64, and the original Mario Kart.

I question why the NES version of Mario 3 never had a save battery. It's a long game with inventory that you may want to save. I would recommend playing that game using save state or a game saver device.
