For diamonds mine at y-54 because the chances get higher and that's where lava pools starts

For the diamonds, iirc there's also a whole thing about how you'll find more if they're covered. As in, if you find em exposed to air, you'll usually find one, maybe two at a time. But if it's completely underground or underwater, you can find around 8 at a time, give or take
