2 months ago I got my first arduino, knew nothing about coding. Now I’m making PCBs for the bare atmega chip thanks to the nature of arduino being so easy to learn!

Got to be honest, I've been loving both the ESP32 and the Pi Pico a lot more than the Arduino Uno! They're like $4 each, 32 bit, massively faster and more powerful, and can have cool stuff like WiFi and a bunch of ADCs, DAC, i2s, spi, uart, capacitive touch pins built in. They really blow the Arduino out of the water. Arduino has more libraries available, but the others are catching up.

I personally prefer something else for prototyping, and once im putting it in a project for a long time, i definitely prefer the raspberry pi Pico if i want a bit more power or the "pro micro"(thats a Leonardo in a small formfaktor).

Dropping the chip in a project requires you to also add most of the other components, like the crystal oscillator, into your project, which adds complexity and expense to the project itself


I believe I got 10 raspberry pi picos for about 5$ each, and it's actually a bit more powerful than the uno R3




I recently purchased an uno r4-wifi, which seems pretty good this far though

One important point to remember is that the bare atmega chip needs to be flashed with the Arduino boot loader to actually be able to program it using the serial port, otherwise use a AVR ISP Programmer

They're becoming more prevalent, especially within the hobbyist and educational world; but, by far, not the heart of actual prototyping.
