N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC) has been used in the medical arena for decades as a rescue for paracetamol overdose and as a mucolytic in Cystic Fibrosis, but newer research leans towards possible uses in Psychiatry. Although too early to provide guidelines, Professor Michael Berk takes us through the exciting possible future uses of this precursor to glutathione production. Professor Berk explains some of the more recent trials, where the link to Psychiatric benefit came from and where future research into NAC in mental health needs to head.

I’ve been taking NAC for the last 2 weeks, initially started at 600mg daily, then increased gradually to 1800mg daily. I have noticed a clear improvement in my depression and anxiety. It’s sill early days so looking forward to see how I’ll feel in 3 months.

Very insightful interview. I’ve just started NAC again after a year because last time I built tolerance to it (was taking it everyday) and it literally fixed my life back then until it I built too much tolerance to it. I’m now trying it again and it’s literally changing the way I think. I used to think very negatively and obsessively and now after taking one dose of NAC I feel like I can actually be in the moment instead of stuck in my head. It’s honestly a miracle drug if it agrees with your body biology.

I’m waiting for Nac to be delivered to me from the US (I’m from EU) and I will use it for OCD. While ive been waiting I’ve heard that nac might exacerbate the OCD in the long run and in higher doses (1200mg +) it might be neurotoxic. What do you think about this? I really need some form of aid for my OCD asap.
