Seve Ballesteros has a special place in the hearts of Open Championship fans. He was always a joy to watch when playing for the Claret Jug.

In 1991, the three-time champion made an incredible start to The 120th Open at Royal Birkdale. The Spaniard led the championship at the end of day one.

This was Seve at his majestic best! A great round of golf from The Open archives.

When was the first time you saw Seve play on television or in person?

He was so admired, a swashbuckling hero of the fairways. When he smiled we all smiled with him. Favourite forever.

Saw him dozens of times close up. Everytime you saw him was like the first time. Without doubt the most graceful swing ever along with Payne Stewart !!!

When you see Seve swinging the club, you wonder how he ever hit a ball offline. His swing was a thing of beauty.

The most charismatic person in golf, ever. What joy to watch, especially in person and I used to go watch him up close with Lee Trevino in the old Pro-Celebrity at Gleneagles, Ladybank GC playing Jack Nicklaus for the opening of the Old Course Hotel, and the greatest 18th hole celebration, winning the Open on the Old Course. He has left an indelible image in sport and greatly missed.

Watched him up close at the Irish Open in 1985. He birdied 15, 16 and 17 to catch Langer who had finished with 63. Seve then birdied 18 to win playoff. One of his many great wins, Open champ beats Masters champ. He had an exceptional knack of doing something really special on the 18th when he needed to.

One of the last seasons Seve swung the club freely before the back injury became unmanageable. Absolute genius.

I followed Seve in the third round that year, and in ‘88. The crowd support for him both times was just incredible.
He could be moody and a difficult guy to play with (because he was so much in his own bubble), but his smile when he played well just lit up the world.
It was so disappointing that he faded in the final round at Birkdale, but he’d already had several nervy last rounds that year so perhaps we should’ve seen it coming.

One of my treasured pieces is a program at the World Matchplay signed by the great man hanging in my office at home.

Watch the video “Seve” at the end the, so called, “hard man” of golf, Nick Faldo, cries like a baby at Seves funeral, it’s very sad.
