Capturing jaw-dropping photos in the sun can be fairly challenging.

In today's #LawsOfLight, we show you how to use high-speed sync strobes when shooting high contrast scenes.

By the end of the video you'll be able to take control of your lighting and overpower the sun.

It is amazing to me that the shutter blades, which are in front of the sensor, does not cause shadow stripes as the strobe is painting the sensor during this multiple exposure. The precision is truly mind blowing perfect with no overlaps or gaps. The major work load and timing comes from the strobe side of the team. Back in my day, ( I began my career in 1976 ) we had copal shutters and had an advantage over focal plane crowd. We could sync at 1/500 vs the common 1/60. Heck the Pentax 6x7 which I still own synced at 1/30. That is an incredible camera with some of the finest lenses ever made by the way. Wow, what a ride I have had! What a fantastic time to be a photographer. Even after all these years, the craft still fascinates me.

Your video should be required for ANY photographer who thinks they understand how a focal plane shutter works. EXCELLENT video!! Thank you!

You can also use a ND filter (variables can be nice). The downside is it darkens your view in the finder but the upside is you can use cheaper lights and waste no power pulsing.

Thank you for sharing this! I had this issue the other day where it was too bright and my speed light didn’t do hss. We figured it out at the end but it’s a good example of what happens with hss with the shutter and speedlight.
Thanks!
