Europe's plan to booster its air defense | DW News

The issue of air defense is high on the agenda at the NATO summit in Vilnius. Germany wants to lead the way with a plan to protect against air attacks. The European Sky Shield Initiative, as it's called, aims to purchase air defense systems jointly to reduce costs. But the plan has proved divisive.

The title should either say "bolster" (= to reinforce) or "boost" (= to improve). Booster is only used in the context of rocket boosters

Putin really screwed up. European countries had steadily been decreasing funding for their military. They felt safe and ignored it. Now, not only are they strengthening their military, and in return NATO they are also strengthening their defenses. Obviously this overall is a good thing, it's the wakeup Europe needed. But it just shows how short sighted Putin was in what the effects of his actions would be.

Same old story: every country in Europe is pushing its own defense industries. Imagine how much money would be saved if European countries united to create a common army with fewer types of equipment (rifles, tanks, helicopters etc.)

France and Germany can not even agree on how Future Combat Aircraft should progress so the idea Europe could develop a missile system inside 15 years would be wishful thinking. Better to buy off the shelf and work together on what can be done such as with Tempest (UK/Italy/Japan and Future Cruise missile (France/UK) as examples.

The best defense is a good offense. Defensive systems and structures / fortifications can blunt an attack but after you need to go and destroy the enemy. You can even argue that offensive capabilities are far more important then defensive ones especially if you are talking about Russia. They have basically infinite resources far more then Europe has

From the beginning, Hungary has not considered Russia a threat, it is their friend, they consider the attack on Ukraine to be provoked and deserved, Orban never wanted to get involved in these fights because he prefers Russia to Ukraine and it was in his favor, and now it turns out that Hungary wants start building a European anti-missile shield that will be aimed at destroying Russian military resources.
