The EU is currently pledging 900 million euros in aid to Tunisia to boost its economy and help it deal with its migration crisis. Italy had previously pledged 700 million euros in aid. Both of these amounts are being pledged without prior approval from the IMF, an indication that the migration crisis is an important issue to Europe, especially to Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, for whom this is a second visit to Tunisia in one week. So far this year, 53,800 migrants (almost double the figures from last year) have made the perilous crossing from Tunisia to Italy. Simon Speakman Cordall tells us more.
