2 years after being in therapy I remember saying something like this to my therapist last session, "Pain is your body trying to tell you something is wrong, Anxiety is your mind telling you something is wrong, all emotions mean something, " and she basically replied with, "My job here is done :)" It was the greatest feeling ever.

The visualization anthony did was actually very on point and smart

This is. Legit. The thing that pushed me to finally start looking for a therapist.
I’ll be starting Monday.

Yup. The hardest part is when your anxiety is right. You know it's right. But you still have to compose with it because it's your job to face the problematic, anxiety inducing, situations.

A lot of times anxiety comes from trauma rewiring your nervous system to flare up & flare up hard at smaller things that your body perceives as threats because it is trying to protect you. Sometimes you gotta talk it down and remind your body that you're in a safe place

I had this whole elaborate explanation about someone you didn’t invite to your party trying to break in, and you keeping them out ends up ruining the party, but ultimately it’s easier to just think of it as your nervous little buddy. All it’s trying to do is keep you safe and happy! So you listen, you say thanks, and then your nervous little buddy quiets down. :)

the other side of that is if it's an irrational fear of something that causes the anxiety rather than just general stress, it's good to think critically about why you're afraid, and really give thought to the worst case scenario you're afraid of, recognizing why it won't happen, or why it might be okay depending on what it is. just really paying attention to it and thinking through it often helps a lot

As someone who has a lot of cbt therapy and has an anxiety disorder...sometimes this is not the case lmao if you have an anxiety disorder most of the time youre panicking everything is actually fine. You just need to learn how to evaluate and assess the situation accurately.

This is literally the opposite of what I work on in therapy. I have a panic attack disorder & ptsd so mine is all about finding ways to tell the anxiety that everything is actually okay and the world isn't ending because you made one mistake, or because everything is loud and you can't think and "oh my god, what if I lose my phone and have no way to call for help if something happens".

I used to just dismiss my anxiety, and thought by saying it's not important it be reassuring my anxiety. But that wouldn't make it disappear and I didn't know that anxiety would just stay with u. But I like his perspective on it, it's like agreeing with ur anxiety and knowing that it feels important to u and u have to accept its company

Thank you so much for acknowledging this. As someone who grew up with anxiety from 10 years old, I had people constantly telling me to ‘just get on with it’ and ‘it’s not real, just in your imagination’, even though I missed so much school with panic attacks and wanted to unalive myself at 11. Now, I have crippling depression and don’t trust myself, because I was literally told to ignore/suppress the thoughts causing me anxiety or distress. For some reason, people seem to actually listen and take it seriously when it comes from men talking about their experience, so thank you 🙏

The visual representation of literally "getting on top" of your anxiety is incredible. To me that promotes pro-activity; doing things ahead of time to prevent it in the first place or dealing with it head on immediately when anxious situations occur.
Either way, physically imagining getting that leg up on anxiety is so empowering and such a wonderful way of thinking about it!

I love this. That's what I have been told by my many therapists/counselors over the years; acknowledging the anxiety allows you to accept it and be aware of it, even if it still stays. Anxiety overall is meant to help us make sure we are safe, but it can hinder us and make us fear things that aren't actually harmful. ❤

My therapist told me similar things on our first session, that she believes mental illness is the disconnection between body and mind. A panic attack is just your body crying for help.

As someone who is super into mental health and stuff, it’s true. Pushing anxiety away makes it stronger. It’s trying to send you a signal and make you aware something is wrong. If you ignore it, your body says “you’re not listening to me!” and the signal just starts getting louder. Until it’s screaming and then you are screaming, lol. But if you gently acknowledge it, lean into the feeling and then let it process or pass, it says “okay, you finally heard me, ” and it settles down. :)
Yes it can be scary at first, especially when you are just trying to figure out how to do it. Leaning into the emotions and allowing yourself to properly feel them can make you uncomfortable, scared, and maybe a little nuts at first. Especially because society tells us feeling certain emotions is a bad thing, or makes you weak. But once you put it into practice, and let go of any judgement—it’s a great way to calm panic attacks, actually prevent panic attacks, and relax in tough situations.
Learning to do it has changed my life and how I deal with stress.

I also love the idea that a lot of therapists out there might have studied psychology from him at undergrad but he'd never thought about emotions as having functions and messages. ❤ Gen X making everything hard for themselves and easier for everyone that followed
