I'm confused. If I wan't to host a TTT server with a custom playermodels addon or add some new guns and gimmicks to it, I won't be able to do that? We're just gonna have to play with that stuff in sandbox mode?

I just can't let that comment about the S&Box Construct being better slide, it just fucking isn't. What made construct so good was it's simplicity, it gave you a huge open field, and a few buildings. The new one is the exact opposite of that, it somehow feels even emptier and doesn't have much personality.

I'm aware that the gross "terry" model can be changed, but it's disingenuous to just say "you can just change it stop whining". because terry is the default, it's almost certainly what most early creators are going to be styling their maps and models around (eg your infection gamemode has zombies that are recolored terries).
I also think it's weird to put this chubby cartoon character into an engine that by default is shaded and stylized to work well with realism, like we see in HL Alyx (which looks phenomenal compared to s&box where terry clashes terribly with the environment). The comedy in gmod came from seeing realistic characters doing insane things. Having the default playermodel be this grotesque is too on-the-nose.

Honestly, s&box feels soulless right now. Source engine and hl2 assets gave so much character to the Gmod. I also really don't like the player models in s&box

I'm not a fan of this at all. Why is Garry trying to make Roblox 2.0 when his fanbase wants Garry's Mod 2.0?

I think that the Half-Life 2 assets in Garry's Mod gave it personality because it sort of cemented itself into Half-Life fandom as "Half-Life 2 except its a sandbox". I'd like to be proven wrong, but I just think that S&box will feel too soulless and similar to so many other "game maker games" too attract the existing Half-Life fandom. Simply put, they're removing the Half-Life from the "Half-Life except it's a sandbox" so now it just feels like... a generic Sandbox.

Please port Half-Life assets to this engine, Facepunch! We need them!

I’m nervous for the direction the game is heading. I get that more freedom = less compatibility, but I still can’t shake the sinking feeling I’m getting. That and I’m very opposed to the standard that the terry model is setting for the modding community. I hope at least the movement is still as good as gmod, at least.

One of the things that made Gmod gamemodes work was that they were incredibly flexible due to you being able to add any addons you wanted. For example, the variety of darkrp is brought upon due to all the different servers with different addons, and the flourishing community of addon makers. This new gamemode focused approach vs. addons feels like a spit in the face. I know garry said that S&box isn't a direct successor to gmod, but the way s&box is heading feels like continuing down the center in a fork road.

i feel like this is not gonna live up to gmod, when it's released it's probably gonna be forgotten in 1 or 2 years lol

not a fan of s&box rn. Feels too different to be that successor to Gmod. It seems to be trying to do a completely different thing than Gmod, and cutting out some of my personal favorite things, when a simple engine upgrade and maybe selective vr support was all needed or really wanted.

I'll be fully honest here, you talking about Sandbox is just so extremely biased. In most categories in which you were comparing Sandbox to Gmod you chose to say how Gmod does everything bad and sandbox does it better, yet you chose to not point out the things that Gmod is better than Sandbox at.

A lot of the limitations of what is possible with addons in Garry's Mod comes down to the Source engine and not Garry's Mod itself. The way map geometry works in Source is entirely different from how it works in Source 2, as it uses the same technique as Quake, known as BSP. BSP is mainly meant for enclosed areas, which is also why open world maps are quite laggy in Garry's Mod. And it's built at map compile time, so there's no way you could possibly change or generate map geometry at runtime. This limitation just doesn't exist in Source 2.
Also, peer to peer servers in Garry's Mod work very well. I've never really had any issues with it. It's very useful for just messing around with your friend(s).

So... am gonna hate myself for saying this but Sandbox will more similar to Roblox with more gamemodes focus then what Garry's mod is right now, being more addon based? Am curious how this will turn out.

I really don't like the changes to the addon system and I seriously hope they rethink it a bit; it's been said in a lot of other comments but I'm gonna reiterate it here, it feels like they're going for something more akin to Roblox and I really don't like that. It's not like I hate Roblox or anything - I play it myself as a matter of fact - but I play Garry's Mod for entirely different reasons than I do Roblox, and Gmod's addon system is a big part of its appeal for me that keeps me coming back from time to time.

like, at _least_ give us custom playermodels, come on. I don't hate the Terry model, but I don't particularly like it either.
