Just to know: *STEAMBOAT WILLIE* is public domain now. The more recent versions of Mickey Mouse are still copyright-protected by Disney.

My gimmick for this public domain Mickey would be that he’s black and white, doesn’t really have a definitive voice, and usually lets out inaudible noises, and his speeches come out of comic bubbles to really indicate he’s a silent character.

Eleven years until the Mickey on the right is also public domain.

The intro is the most accurate representation I’ve seen of the original Mickey in years

You could probably do Steamboat Willie's design completely, but you would probably have to keep the hat he has in that cartoon specifically, and probably, if you HAVE to color him, make his pants and gloves FAR from the copyrighted design.

There's a poster by Ub Iwerks (co-creator of Mickey) that was made in 1928 featuring Mickey in his red shorts and gloves (google mickey mouse 1928 poster). There's also the design used for the Steamboat Willie title card, it's the same as Plane Crazy Mickey but with gloves and stripe shorts.

Edit: Also the original poster of Gallopin' Gaucho, another Mickey short from 1928, has also entered the public domain. It features Mickey with red shorts and yellow shoes.

On behalf of myself and the two people sitting 3 metres behind me, we thank you for your contributions to our planet. Walt (no affiliation to any real person living or dead and no affiliation to the Walt Disney Company and its subsidiaries) bless Steamboat Willy (no affiliation to Mickey Mouse, the character owned and trademarked by the Walt Disney Company, that was formerly known as 'Steamboat Willy' in his earliest appearances.)

the silent version of plane crazy is public domain NOT the sound version which was released in 1929 and will enter public domain in 2025 just a warning

i love how you just say never to draw the right one. For the life of me i cannot find when the copyright would expire for so-called modern mickey mouse.

You can still draw SBW in any style that you want as long as its not a direct copy of both of the modern mickeys (paul's 2013 mickey and the one we all know and love), you can't really copyright an art style, although taking extra precausions is fine too.
You can use SBW Mickey's design from his short as well, all that you need to NOT do is reference something that came AFTER like modern stuff, and make a disclaimer that you are not affiliated with disney in any way, basically only use what you have from his short and only that.

Sidenote: Drawings and fanmade content like fanart of Mickey is still and will always be allowed.

The heart shape mickey has is actually meant to be his big ass eyes-the black dots are his pupils, its just not detailed like plane crazy mickeys

Edit: while the short The Mad Doctor is in the public domain, certain aspects of Mickey's design in it, as well as Pluto are not until 2029

You actually CAN draw him with the gloves because The Mad Doctor (1933) is also in the public domain because they didn't extend it. That short also includes Pluto btw so he's fair game too, just make sure you use public domain shorts as reference and you're safe lol

The other shorts that are also public domain are Gallopin' Gaucho and the silent version of Plane Crazy

I don't like how videos like these still need to exist because some people STILL mistakenly assume that EVERY version of Mickey (I.E. Mickey in general) is in the Public Domain.

Plane crazy Mickey is also known as “Mortimer Mouse”

In terms of satire this is very good news.

also gallopin' gauchos is public domain now, and the mad doctor is public domain because disney didn't renew it's copyright because it was banned in the uk, so two other different mickey shorts to use to your hearts content

The one on the far right: You better start drawing up your last will because you will lose your soul.
