My wife has the 16-volt version (has 4 batteries instead of 3), and I was able to successfully replace the batteries in it. It, too, had gotten to where it would only run for a minute or so on a full charge. I simply pried the old tabs loose from the original batteries using a small screwdriver, then had to scuff the ends of the new batteries with sandpaper to get the solder to stick (I used regular 60/40 solder like I use for audio cable connectors). I replaced the tabs with short pieces of wire, since prying the original tabs loose pretty well made a mess of them. So--if you're handy with a soldering iron, it can be done! Just pay attention to the orientation (+/-) of the original batteries and/or take some pictures with your phone so you have something to reference while doing the job! And be sure to scuff the new ends of the batteries with sandpaper or the solder won't stick properly to them.

Thank you. You saved me a ton of time trying to do this myself. Now to find a new model where I CAN replace the batteries!

Thank you for the concise explanation! I wish all of the diy videos on YouTube were like this.

Peter, you are awesome. Thanks for saving me the time it would have taken to discover this for myself.

They do this on PURPOSE. They know they're edging out competent DIY'ers from being able to fix these items and designing them with built-in obsolescence.
We're a planet drowning in plastic, large scale and micro, and there are less and less of us DIY'ers out there, culminating in perfectly good motors and parts being tossed out.

Last I checked, solder doesn't really stick to the metal used on battery cases. (If you try that, it's not going to be a good time.) You need a high current spot welder to attach the conductive tab strips. And it has to heat up quickly enough to not heat up the rest of the battery in the process. (There are videos about that elsewhere on YouTube.)

The shame is they don't make the battery more modular with a plug connector to them, so it'd be an easy swap to replace them and not have to throw out the rest of the vac which is still likely to be good.

Same...I was planning to replace the batteries too because my 3.5 year old vacuum won’t go for more than 45 seconds on a full charge. Bummer because it’s a great little vacuum and seems wasteful to just chuck the whole thing.

The newer version of this device uses 4 x 18650 cells and if one of the four becomes too far discharged, the device won't charge. I'm currently using a single cell charger designed to charge 18650's to charge each cell separately and see what this gets me, seems to be working.
But I have to agree, this device was made to be disposable (unfortunately).

Thanks for the video . . . I am NOT electrically proficient, so your honest and concise video saved me a lot of time to even determine if I could swap out the batteries. Getting a new dustbuster instead!

Thanks Peter. YOU CAN NOT REPLACE THE BATTERIES EVERYBODY! Just wanted everyone to know off the bat Pete. I really liked our B & D vacuum, (when it was newish), but after less than 2 years it only runs for 1 minute no matter how long you charge it - just like you said. I hate when a company makes something that is for throwing away. I think I might just get the Armor All 1.5 gallon portable corded vacuum. It doesn't take a bag and can be reversed for filling air mattresses etc. At least I know it will last a while (I hope) It looks small enough to carry around the house and might as well plug it in. It costs about half the price of the B & D. Thanks for the vid! Just my opinion.

I have one of these vacs, and tried to replace the batteries myself. But you need a spot welder to attach the leads. Now a spot welder is $150, or you can make your own if you're quite handy and electronically inclined. Or you can do what I did, and contact B&D and politely ask how do I replace the batteries which appear to have died just a year after purchase. They graciously sent me a brand new unit! Problem solved (though, I still want to find a way to weld the replacement batteries so I'll have a second dustbuster for upstairs)!

Thank you for the video. My handheld vacuum only last about 30 seconds and was going to crack it open to replace the battery, damn.

Thanks for posting this.. my Vac battery died and sent it to a technician.. the cost to replace it too expensive.. not worth.. I will but new Vac is much better...
Shame that Black & Decker Vac not last more than three years.. I have two Vac with same battery problem and can't replace it easily ☹☹

Unfortunately USPS have revised their mailing policy. All Lithium battery packs cannot be shipped by itself, needs to be in the appliance/device it powers. Excellent how to video, thank you.

Thank you. You got to the point quickly. THANK YOU!

Just buy a 18650 holder that lets you pop in and out new batteries and replace the existing holder if you don’t want to deal with the spot welded batteries.
