Curently I do 6-8 reps with heavy weights and also focus on achieving mind/muscle connection with correct technique.
For Newbie, I as well would recommend high rep range with less weight

You are absolutely right. During my beginner time we would do 15-20 reps with incorrect form. As soon as i corrected the form, reps decreased to 10-15 but the muscle activation felt lot good than before.
