What is Runway Status Lights (RWSL)?
RWSL is comprised of red in-pavement airport lights which signal a potentially unsafe situation on taxiways and runways. The system is automated based on inputs from surface and terminal surveillance systems.

The system is comprised of two areas: Runway Entrance Lights provide a warning signal to aircraft crossing or entering a runway from intersecting taxiways; Takeoff Hold Lights provide a warning signal to aircraft in position for takeoff.

Stop Bar Lights

Stop Bar Lights are a warning signal for an aircraft or vehicle approaching an active runway. Stop bars are a row of unidirectional red lights placed just before the runway holding point markings. They are used to increase situational awareness and serve as an additional visual reminder by ATC that the runway is not to be entered.

What's with the stupid, phrase "cancel takeoff clearance"? It's cumbersome and doesn't roll of the tongue. Why not "abort takoff" three times in a row? Much more succinct and easy to say.

It's now over a year later. I'm still trying to figure out why AA 106 was allowed to depart. NTSB complains that the CVR was overwritten by the time the plane landed in London. Also complains that crew would not cooperate with interviews. Why was AA 106 not instructed to return to the gate for crew to be interviewed? Flight that was all good was delayed a whole day. Flight that nearly got 100s of folks killed went on its merry way.
