This is common human psychology, when you’re looking at something, you tend to find instances of your subconscious thinking in that matter.
For eg. if you were to look at the clouds, you’ll find hundreds of things that you would relate to because that thing is in your subconscious mind

For anyone who doesn’t understand.. it was painted. Both carved and painted. The old drawings and carvings went away (became less visible), when they painted over it, and carved. If you draw on a paper, there will be a carve-ish, and then the color. If you’d write something, then erase it, then write something else on there, then remove it, you would get a combination of the two things you wrote, in the carving
