What If Earth Started Spinning Clockwise?
Показать описание
Ignoring the fact that a sudden, grinding change in the direction of the Earth’s rotation would cause or be caused by a global catastrophe unlike any other the world has never seen, the most obvious difference between our Earth and one where the planet spins clockwise are the directions of the rise and fall of the sun. It’s pretty common knowledge that our sun rises in the east and sets in the west. Every Boy and Girl Scout worth their salt knows that if you’re lost, all you have to do is look up at the sky and you can at least point yourself in the right direction. That is if you were paying attention in the first place. You can even get a sense of the time based on what point the sun has reached in its journey across the sky. But if Earth spun west instead of east, the sun would rise in the west and set in the east. It’s a simple, seemingly innocuous difference, but this small change is a gateway to much greater inconsistencies with equally enormous consequences.
After all, if the sun rises in the west, the moon will rise in the west too. Quite frankly, our moon is so small in comparison to Earth that it would have no choice, but to follow the planet’s new rotation. Despite this, the moon does a lot more for Earth than just lighting up the sky at night and terrorizing werewolves.
Most notable and perhaps the most known affect it has on our planet is that of its pull on Earth’s oceans. To be clear, scientists believe we’d still have a tide and waves without the moon, but they wouldn’t be nearly as dramatic. If the Earth and her moon were spinning the opposite way from today that means that ocean currents are going to be circling backwards too. As a result, the major Atlantic current that’s currently responsible for blowing heat around the globe would completely disappear and a new, quite possibly stronger wind would form on the other side of the world.
That might not seem like such a big loss when you first think about it. Sure, we lose one current, but we gain another, better one. The Earth still gets heat. How much could much could ocean currents really change in our daily lives? Oh, not much, only the weather and climate of the entire planet.
