Hey guys, Welcome to the 1st ever episode of Talking Table Tennis!

In these shows we will be covering all aspects of the game including equipment, table tennis news, controversies and much much more!

For our 1st episode we have managed to (via the ITTF) get our hands on some of the new colour table tennis rubbers that have been approved by the ITTF.

These will be legal to use in all competition worldwide as of September 2020 after the Tokyo Olympics!

Comment below what you think of this new change by the ITTF.

I share Tom's Opinion. It really make it looks unprofessionell

I think the pips players are going to love the new colors because, for example, green looks more black in the shadows when the light is not hitting it directly, which could confuse players on which side your opponent is playing.

I love the colours, BUT could create an unfair advantage if the rubber blends with the background (as we already saw in this video). It is far easier to create environments/backgrounds that do not blend or clash if you can predict what colour the bat will be. Also, these slightly florescent colours might make it harder in some cases to distinguish where on the bat the ball connects with. This is critical when determining the difference between top or under spin for example. It would be a little foolish to compromise this for superficial reasons. I wonder what tests have been carried out.

It is possible that this will drive the prices up, as short volumes usually mean higher prices. In the short term, manufacturers may overlook this because of the initial increase in sales, but in the long term, I believe this will drive prices up.

Table tennis as a sport is quite complicated, the technique requirements, the footwork -- all this requires a lot of training and serious commitment. And here comes ittf with this dumb idea which makes table tennis, as Tom noted, amateurish, a joke. This is simply disrespectful to the players. Frankly, it's disgusting.

It, s the future for table tennis every one will adapt to it just like the 40mm ball

if anything add pink and yellow as approved colours, while still making black a mandatory side. I dont mind the change that is coming. I like a little flair.

look, at some point all sports need to innovate the visual aspect. some people will root for a particular team/brand/person just based on looks. its human nature.

someone should set up some metrics and track it for a while to see if this is a positive or negative. if it is not showing any signs of growth, then go back to the old way of doing things and just annotate this as a blip in the grand scheme of things.

Maybe a little problem: I am colorblind and super bright colors like blue or pink can confuse me with the ball (this problem can be boosted due to the illumination). I would love to have a lot of rubber colors, but more dark and opaque versions.

They should have made it like a different color with a different style of gameplay like in f1(soft tires are red meanwhile hard tires are white) However in table tennis for ex. aggresive forehand rubber can be green or backhand defense rubber can be yellow. This can actually improve the crowd/viewers watching interest because they can tell what kind of rubber they are using, aside from just seeing black and red

That's crazy! Oh, how about transparent rubbers so the wood grain of the blade shows thru, especially if it's a fishscale.

The green one really takes me back to when I just started playing. However, really hope for some less bubble-gum-ish colors. I mean, even some kids have taste

Spectacular points & trick shots do more for TT media reach than this kind of bullshit!

Super unprofessional. Tom is even protesting by wearing red and black.

Good idea to promote the sport with kids and amateurs. Problem is - manufacturers targeting that sector never really cared about ittf rules, so this new rule changes nothing (check out how outdoor Cornilleau bats look like - colour wise). BAD idea for professional market - stock and quality control issues. Imagine trying to buy a non-black rubber, seeing only pink left at a discount, but it doesn't play the same as green etc etc. And last but definitely not least - bright colours will blend with the ball, so more difficult to identify contact point during shots and serves, especially in halls with poor lighting. So.... NO.

The green does looks like black when you move the angle, now, is there any additional feature besides the fact of the color? Will they have additional spin, control or any other advantage?

Do you know where can i buy one of these? Are they online?

Make short pimples a set color, like green, long pimples pink. Anti power rubbers, brown, etc etc. Then there's a point of difference to having different coloured rubbers.
