If this was an anime she'd be the prodigy who has been playing since childhood who lost to the main character with a month's worth of training.

I don’t like the way the coach talked to her, but I think she will look back and be proud of what she achieved as a small child. Some kids do get happiness from competition. I experienced a lot of frustration and emotional outbursts learning to play the violin, but I also gained a lot of self esteem when I would win competitions over my peers or get into advanced orchestras. There is pain in the short term but long term confidence and pride.

I know Olympic is a great achievement but cherishing ur childhood is something that no medal on Earth can replace or substitute that way of life.

See? That's why you should never said anything like "he's really blessed with all the talent, he's a genius. Why wasn't I gifted with such talents?"

Talent only makes up for the headstart, only about 5% of the whole journey. The rest is filled with hardwork. It's a road filled with blood, sweat, and *tears.*

What a beautiful and gifted girl. I feel awful seeing her cry. She is already a champion in my eyes.

When sports were invented, the idea was to have fun. We need to remember that.

At age of 6 I was playing tennis with my chickens . Living in the farm was not that easy.

Just looking at her cry is telling me that she is going to learn a valuable lesson: the first step to success is failure, and how she already learnt to deal with it and keep going like a true athlete: “see, adjust, and adapt.”

I've taught Chinese children and the pressure they receive from such a young age causes such stress and sadness from extra curricular activities.

I speak Mandarin and understand Chinese culture having worked in the Chinese community for 20 years.

Often I would ask my students do you like the extra classes you do and enjoy the subject and want to do it, 75% would say 'no' .

Social pressure to achieve for both adults and children causes so much distress. One Chinese adult friend said to me that they hate having to belong to this rat race but that they had to do it because they is what is expected and needed to get on in life. The fear of loosing face is a big thing.

Equally, Chinese people are so generous and kind. I've had countless experiences at the tables of Chinese families where great generosity and friendship has been shown, not just because I'm a westerner but just because they wanted to. I've had so many open conversations about all sorts of wonderful topics with great humanity, honesty and compassion.

Maybe this little girl loves ping pong, I don't know but the question I'd ask her with no judgement is 'Is this truly what you want to do?'

Much love to all of my wonderful Chinese friends 💜
