I got a 15 page paper due today at 11:55pm and I’m watching this. I don’t even play table tennis

Bad habit number 9. Watching lots of table tennis YouTube instead of playing. 😅

One of my biggest mistakes is not watching the ball too close when it is coming towards me. I use my peripheral vision a lot which makes me loose around 20-30% of the points. It is a really bad habit which I am trying to fix.
Thanks for the video!

Thanks a lot Tom, I am guilty of nearly all those bad habits...I've blamed recent defeats on my racket, but deep down I knew it was bad and lazy habits that defeated me. I have a lot of work to do, thanks for sharing!

You broke the whole secret. You didn't leave anything that shouldn't have been told. Bad news for coaches :))

Best table tennis tips video...
Ive been playing tt from last 3 months and I've made almost all the mistakes mentioned here ... Thankfully I have overcome few of them and am progressing everyday ... Hopefully I'll be able to correct all of them soon

I used to play backspin only and assumed everyone would beat me if we ever got into a topspin rally. The only time I'd break that rule was if I thought I could hit a winner. Nowadays I fear topspin rallies much less and incorporate a lot of loops into my game, but I think something that is left over from my previous style is that I put everything into my attacking shots. I'll try reducing the power and see what happens.

I never really thought too much about ball placement because what I was doing seemed to work well. That was until for the first time I played a left handed player and I found I kept setting him up for forehand topspin winning shots, it really threw me off and it was hard to kind of break my habits and change out of my normal groove

I am guilty of all of them. Thanks for pointing it out and how to get out of those bad habits.

On point no.5 on mindless serving: just to add on that on top of thinking through what serve we will execute, it is generally useful too (esp. at amateur level) to observe the position and focus of our opponent, so we can serve a type or to a position of his/her weak part at that point in time. But yes, the more advanced our opponent is, the less effective is this approach.

Now how much more spot-on is a tutorial video ever going to get?! Great concrete tips dealing with cause and not consequence of playing bad. Kudos!

Yep - all great tips - excellent work, Tom. I mention a lot of these when I'm coaching but serving and playing with purpose, and pushing long pushes are two things I don't teach enough so that was interesting for me. Cheers.

Excellent video with good tips! As a beginner, I probably make all the mistakes, but I've already been able to successfully improve on the topic of "Standing upright". I think if you focus on certain habits instead of "just playing" you will progress much faster.

Wow my very first Tabletennis video. I enjoyed it very much. I play it weekly and I totally love it. I have not improved for a long time - but now I know what to do, which is watching your videos. Thank you and a big hello from Australia 🇦🇺 😊

Great one! Another one could be ' not waiting for the ball '. In other words, trying to hit it a wee bit earlier than one should. A bit more time takes both the speed and the spin off the ball.
