Interesting... perhaps the height localization places you on the same level as the ground right next to you. A possibility here is that the falling spleen animation creates a wider hitbox or perhaps the void consists of two layers the killbox at the bottom that kills you no matter how far you fall and the 'sea level' hitbox layer that you can go through at a particular level but not from higher than a specific point where VELOCITY is involved. The programming is based on both velocity and hit boxes, both of which go hand in hand when it comes to surfaces. The box potentially hardens at a particular velocity because notice there how you jumped off the platform, fell and died at a lower point where the definite killbox is because that location of death is consistent and there is proof of this consistency, velocity plays a part in solidifying hit boxes on maps with voids NOT about how far you fall, how fast you fall.... you need hit boxes to trigger these events it's impossible otherwise.

Actually you just jumped off the map and hit the dead zone
If it were any other map you'd die from fall damage
In the hell world yes, you'd explode but here you just jumped into a dead zone
