Just a thought: check with the rental company and ask what they do with their old vans. Sometimes they are sold off, and you could pick a bargain, but you need to get a full mechanical check to make sure there is no issue.

Keep up the grind, dude. You're almost there. I know what it's like working towards something exciting like this. I was supposed to make my permanent Japan move months ago, but got delayed another couple of months.

Hi Robin-san take it as a road bump along your journey which the viewers had the privilege to view & what was shared was it showed the world how calm & orderly it was after a road accident took place, no shouting, unruly behaviour or rudeness exchanged between drivers. Thank you for sharing how beautiful the Japanese culture & people are

That upper deck, where you pulled out the large board, was the bed (you also didn't pull it far enough out so it clicked down flat). There are quite a few Japanese van-lifers that use the Kei trucks (light duty) and the larger medium duty versions. There are a lot of things you could do to customize them, far more than a normal van, plus you have the added bonus of being able to move the "house" portion off the truck to another truck, or just to park the camper for when you need to use the truck alone. You should well consider this, as it might be a better fit for you.

A few solar panels, and a simple battery system could give you free power in the back, allowing you to use some household items like rice cookers and hot plates, and you could keep customizing on it as you travel and earn more money to afford it.

Hello Robin-san, I enjoy each video. I used to work as a delivery driver and I wanted to offer one safety tip for parking. Statistically, accidents in parking lots occur most often while backing up. Sometimes backing up is unavoidable so we had a rule that we had to back into parking spaces before competing the delivery. This way, we would take care of the backing up when we had a good view of the surroundings. Things can happen while we were away from the vehicle; pedestrians can move around, and we would no longer have a clear view of the parking lot when we got back to the vehicle. Backing into the parking space straight away meant we would always depart moving forward with a clear view.

Its pretty cozy, but I think getting a van with some sort of water storage for sink, toilet, or shower would be best. You could always install a fridge/freezer up top with a microwave too. Great vid. Loved the Van-San!

Yes, Robin, if you can live in a tent out of one backpack and traveling by skateboard, you can live in a van.

A custom built box with insulation against hot and cold is great, but the ideal setup would be a tall van. The seats and cargo area would be one big space, with enough room to stand to utilize the most space. The slide in the camper is supposed to be a bed, but it's way too low. Good luck in your quest for van life.

Nomad San, this is very important!!!

I'm not sure how common it is there, but having a camper van or truck that has access to the drivers seat from the back section is something to think about. If someone or something approaches the vehicle in the middle of the night while you are sleeping, it is much safer and easier to just move to the front seat and turn the engine and lights on. Even if it's just a window or hatch you can squeeze through without having to go outside first.

Being stuck in the back with no way to leave while you can hear someone or something pacing around outside can be a terrifying experience that I wouldn't want you or anyone to deal with.

Maybe a Kei-truck with a 'pop-up' camper, so the height can be extended when you're parked and lowered when you are driving ... this will help with stability.
AND you can use the truck for deliveries also.
Good luck!
