Pumped Hydro power turbine start up (LOUD !)

I’ve been in the turbine hall at one of Canada’s largest hydro power plants. The turbine shaft itself pushes out a mighty hot wind as it turns; 500MW is a whole lot of power!

So I imagine that's the actual speed of the turbine impeller as water flows through it beneath. Fascinating how much hydro pressure is being forced through the dam.

The speed the shaft starts to spin up after the intake valve is opened is eye hellish environment inside that turbine housing

Take the initial start up sound, and thats what a nuclear plant turbine hall sounds like. Steam is VERY LOUD

So all that clatter at start was the anti reversing clutch balls flying around until it had enough speed to keep them up?
