The Beloved Hoyas: Care & Repotting Tips For These Exotic Plants

Some many Hoyas, so little room! I grow my Hoyas outdoors here in Santa Barbara but I’m giving care tips for them indoors too because they always have been and are now ever popular houseplants.

There are over 200 species of Hoyas out there with a diverse array of foliage color and shape as well as flower color and form. These tropical plants, many of them epiphytic succulents, are vines and some are shrubs. All of them so very interesting in my book!

I love their fleshy, glossy leaves and their unique waxy flowers. I remember seeing quite a few of these twining plants in homes and greenhouses growing up In New England. Many of them were in hanging baskets and we had one that had trails which were at least 6′ long. Exotic as they are, they’re not hard to care for at all.

Will the yellow plant get a darker green again? I have one that turned light green from being in a window with to much sun. Also my one plant has aphids I think they are gone and they pop up again. Do they get in the soil? I thought I would repot it. This is the first time I have ever had a pest problem. Thank you.

I have 5 different Hoyas in my collection right now. Hoya carnosa, h. c. variegata, h. c. compacta variegata, h. c. Tricolor, and h. nummularioides.

Nell, you look so much like my sister. You rwo can be twins.
That is my Hoya. I haven't seen it online.
I bought in a small container two years ago. The girl told me not to repot it, since it likes to be rootbound. I will repot mine in a little bigger pot. Mine grew a lot and actually has a third trailing leg on it now. It has never blumed. Mine us like the bottom section of your plant. The new foilage at the end of the legs are whiteish.

Got my first hoya just the other day. Actually two. I got a Krimson Queen and a Hindu Rope. Have not repotted them yet. Wanted to wait and research first.
