The Hoya carnosa variegata growing up the umbrella on my patio was in need of more soil in its pot & was bleached out because getting too much sun. Shame on me, time to take action! I didn’t want another hanging pot so I decided to train it to grow upwards.
This is how I trained my Hoya on bamboo u hoops.

I had picked up a low plastic terra cotta colored bowl a year ago at our local art & reuse store for 50 cents. This is one of my many “gently used” finds. I sprayed it a combo of blue & purple along with accents of gold for a little pizazz. I decided to use 3′ bamboo u hoops which I found at a local dollar store. They came in packages of 2 for 99 cents bringing the grand total of this project to $2.50. How sweet it is for a bargain scavenger like me!

My Hoya is so happy since it’s been moved to its new bright but shady location. The foliage has really greened up and more white leaves are now appearing. The blushes of pink which this Variegated Hoya is known for are also emerging. And, it’s flowering like it never has before which warms the cockles of my horticultural heart. It’s flowered 3 times since the transplant and move and there are 7 buds ready to open on it right now.

We are moving to a new place and it was sort of making me nervous to find a new place to hang my Hoya, because I'm not sure there will be a convenient spot for it, but I love that plant and had it grown from a 12 inches stem to a huge cascading plant that has been producing these wonderful flowers for the past 5 summers, so this tutorial (pun) is a great inspiration and I will totally train my Hoya to climb now instead of hang, I am so excited! Thank you for this video! :)

I filmed this video over a 7 month period so you'll see some wardrobe changes. It's so much happier now that it's been repotted & moved!

Nell, how many plants are in the pot. I have a bunch of cuttings that I took off of my Hoya Carnossa. I do have one pot that has 3 plants in it and its doing awesome, but I didn't know if I had to take some out or leave them. Right now the cuttings are in a 4 inch pot so what size should I be putting them in cause now the plastic pot keeps falling over cause of the runners. Thanks!!
