This is the twenty-sixth of my series, Sadler's Honest Book Reviews - in which I examine and discuss a range of books focused on practical philosophy, leadership, personal development, or philosophy as a way of life. These reviews discuss style and structure, key ideas, some of the content, strengths, and any problematic aspects of the works, and include my recommendations for readers.

This review focuses on Simon Blackburn's book, On Truth (Oxford University Press. 2018)

Really glad you reviewed this book! For a casual like me I have enjoyed Blackburn and the book 'Think' was one of my first philosophy books I ever read. It's definitely biased like you pointed out but since I respect your opinion it was great to have you critique it!

Now do 'explaining postmodernism' by Stephen Hicks. (Just kidding)

Looks like this book isn't available in the UK. Do you know if it's a reprint of his 2006 book for the US market or if its a US branded version of his 2017 book?

With the problems you mentioned in mind, is there a book you would recommend, that does the topic more justice?

Thought I left a comment on this video yesterday…distinctly remember typing it. Perhaps an evil genie implanted the memory of typing the comment into my mind, or maybe it was folks who have my brain wired up in a vat? 🤷‍♂️

This was very interesting. I first encountered Blackburn on the BBC In Our Time podcast’s episode on Truth, and I was a little bit wary of him due to the way he talked about relativism as though it were a beast in urgent need of slaying. Based on your review, however, I think I’ll probably pick this book up after I’ve read a little more widely in epistemology.
