I worked as a vendor at MS Redmond campus in Records Management (not tech related). Many people start as vendors and then soon become direct employees with MS. I now work in a completely different industry and city (telecom real estate), but being a vendor is a great launching point for starting at MS.

How did u land getting a job at Microsoft? I want to start at entry level. I have completed associate degree in business administration!

I got a job at one of the big "brand name" tech companies (they get a bit twitchy when I say it publicly but I can promise you've heard of them), without a college degree.

It wasn't easy, and this won't work for everyone, but what seemed to work for me was be the "theory guy" at all my jobs leading up to it; be the guy who knows the difference between a functor and a monoid, be the guy who can list off all the virtues and shortcomings of model checking mathematics like TLA+, be the guy who knows how the F# compiler optimizations work. If you can do that, then it's amazing how quickly people begin to forget that you don't have any official credentials (it doesn't hurt that I really like compsci theory :) ).

If you *do* want that reputation, I recommend reading a lot about niche functional languages like Haskell, Scheme, Idris, or F#, and understand the mathematical underpinnings of them. If anyone here wants some book recommendations feel free to email me.

What are the chance getting a job in Microsoft for the over 45's in UK?

He should take look at the Microsoft job portal, look at the job roles he’s interested in, make note of the job requirements and what programming languages they expect from candidate and spend the year building up those skill. He might need some experience in another language besides php but having work experience should give him some advantage over other candidate when he does apply for a job.
