Ubuntu switching to a model where only newer hardware is supported would create a major problem here in Extremadura, Spain. The whole public school and healthcare systems rely on Ubuntu LTS, and the hardware is often older than at least my younger middle-school students. It would, therefore, be easier for both systems to switch to, say, LMDE than buy so much new hardware.

I'm usually fine with dropping older hardware support, especially because if you have a very old hardware - you will have better time using a specialized lightweight distro. But a lot of those are based on Ubuntu, so in this case I think a hit will be rather significant.

The issue with Forkknife on Linux is that Tim Sweeney is a child. He seems to think that the way to greatness is to always do the opposite of what Valve does. He's done it when Valve prohibited blockchain economies, and again when they banned AI shovelware. He's doing the exact same with Linux and expects praise for it.

2015 seems really recent. There's still a decent amount of tech on eBay and second hand shops that have computers older than 2015. Hell im still using a Latitude D630 from 2008.

I think it's too early to drop Sandy Bridge CPUs. Web Browsers are still snappy with Ivy Bridge-E CPUs. Unlike 2011, Quad core are still good compared to P4s in 2011.

I've been tinkering with computers since 1997 and only ever used windows for gaming, productivity and everything else in between. Since buying the Steam Deck OLED, I have been obsessed with Linux and learning everything I can. I re-purposed an old FX-8350 + RX580 8GB PC build to tinker with various distros and I'm enjoying the experience. Linux is awesome!

Ubuntu's decision to remove older hardware than 2015 would kill their market share.

This story of Ubuntu considering dropping hardware support sounds a lot like what Microsoft did with Windows 11. It’s far less egregious, though, because switching from one Linux distro to another is much easier than switching from Windows, the devices are older, and the end of life for the latest LTS is farther out into the future. Even so, it’s a PR blunder to announce the consideration of this.

I'm still sporting a Sandybridge from the early 2010's, and yes, it does start to feel long in the tooth, especially without an SSD.
It's frustrating because I can't really get a faster machine for the foreseeable future, although I want to learn Blender. At least Krita still runs well on this config.

I've finally switched to linux thanks to the wayland support in ubuntu. No more video lag in firefox for me.

The whole reason I got into Linux was because I found some of my retired dad's old PCs and laptops hanging around. Most were core 2 duo macbooks and an old mac pro 2008 (two cpus with a total of 8 cores) tower. I thought their fates were tied to the recycler and then I took a chance and explored Linux. I was literally astounded at how the old machines came back to life and were snappy enough to do most of the things we do with current pcs. These things can run old games, and with the right video card you can even have the darn thing running a 4k monitor. It is absolutely crazy that we would begin to drop support for machines that can literally run a jellyfin server or other home automation. Shame upon you Sirs! Shame! LOL!

Them dropping support for old systems is horrible for me. I've been extremely low on funds lately and my system is actually pretty old now.
I wanted to replace my old computer several times but the terrible financial situation I've been has made it impossible.
It's sad knowing I might not even be able to use any Ubuntu systems soon.

Awesome video. If Ubuntu would stop the support of CPUs older than 2015, then I guess we'll see increasing interest in Debian, which is good. Many Linux users chose Linux partially because of its performance on older hardware. And I personally wouldn't be able to run Ubuntu, though I don't want to use it anyways.

Because the steam deck is still a open system you can still install the Epic game launcher with wine. So the 30% cut does not apply because the steam deck let you install other launcher. but hey that may be because they do not want to support their biggest competitor by letting people play it on thier console

So now we have LXQt, Xfce, Cinnamon, and probably MATE developers actively working on wayland support. I can't believe it. Almost a year ago this seemed impossible.

Honestly, Nick, with you being as popular as you are, it is impressive and heartwarming that you read our comments at all. Heck, you've replied to a couple of mine. You usually don't get YouTubers replying at all once they get to your channel size.

AI code doesn't sound bad. It sounds pretty cool actually and would probably be very helpful. My only problem with AI is when it's being integrated into things it is not needed at all, like how Microsoft is apparently doing with the Windows Desktop. I've no idea what an "AI-powered Desktop" is and I don't want to see it

Are Sandy Bridge to Broadwell CPUs all v2? Or are just some of them v2? Because either way, that would be an extremely stupid move from the Ubuntu devs. Those are EXACTLY the type of chips that are still running well yet were abandoned by Windows 11. AT LEAST 24.04 LTS has to support them (outlasting Windows 10 by 3 years), otherwise the argument of being an alternative is kind of a joke.
