Relics are like old blue jeans- they fit, feel and look better!

I had a 63 Strat in ‘65 I bought used from Manny’s. It wasn’t relic’d, it was “as new”. Left it somewhere- I was 13 and left everything everywhere and can’t remember how it sounded ( we played through Kodak projectors and a 3:1 Princeton with Mini Farfisa and 2 guitars going into amp in one input. I started playing more seriously when I hit 60 and have owned a ML custom shop (the red one) and a Masterbuilt very lightly relic’d- I hit the neck with brass wool and Formby’s- and learned what I wanted. So, for half the price of those 2 guitars, I went to a luthier (Neil Smith, vegas Guitars) and ordered closer to what I wanted. Course, I wish my “real” ‘63 would show up (hey Frampton??) but my feeling today is get yourself a custom built guitar from a great luthier. Masterbuilts are made to order custom spec’d to the original purchaser. What bunker have we fallen into remotely interested in paying such high prices for somebody else’s specs?? Agree with you- if you love it, it will always play great! Thanks.

I'm 100% with you on all of your comments Jeff. I have owned three or four Golden Era Fenders and Gibsons and certainly regret selling them given the soaring value, however they have been replaced with Gibson and Fender Custom Shop relics that are either on a par or better. On the subject of artist-owned relics, I managed to acquire a Fender Cunetto Stratocaster that had been built by the Custom Shop for Kenny Wayne Shepherd, an absolutely superb but very heavy relic. I only truly miss two vintage guitars a battered old 1959 Les Paul Junior and a player-grade Fiesta Red 62 Strat... it's highly unlikely that I'll ever be able to afford those again.

oh Jeff...had to laugh straight off at the begining...."relics are for posers..."...which reminded me of "school of rock"...where Jack says...."oh no...they are not Rockers...they are posers..."....yep....hey i just love to "tinker" with my guitars and mod them...change parts....pickguards, mounting rings, tuners, pick ups and reverse...change some potis and knobs...it's fun....i love that...because it's MY guitar and i can do that...if i want to....cheers....and all the best....

There are a lot of guys who have a guitar like that ‘54 strat copy you showed. It’s made by an unrelated boutique builder guy but looks like a an old Fender, Gibson or Gretsch. Billy Gibbons is one well known guy like that. Jack White did that too. There a lot I’m sure.

Thanks, your talks are fun. I’ve never had the money to own a custom shop or desirable vintage but I want a less sticky and plastic feel. So built a Warmoth strat with a satin finished body (their poly is very thin) and an unfinished roasted maple neck. Great feel for less. Now it’s hard to play finished necks at all of any type.

Great video! I recently picked up a 58 Strat Journeyman Relic. I like the like relic'ing, but agree about the neck. I am going to use 0000 steel wool to take the stickiness out of the neck. Good idea or is there a better way to get the warn in feel?

Check out a few 300 year old violins and cellos. Constant professional use and most look wonderful. Come to think of it, Clapton’s famous ’64 335 still looks spotless. Sometimes the best instruments were well cared for.

Greetings from great Britain...im on the fence re relicing....that said i cannot afford them anyway....especially the ones that actually look good and this relic stuff IS an art and tricky to do right...and if i could afford a custom shop id want it to look pretty new not knackered with pretend sratches and cig own a couple of 80s guitars and a 80s BC Rich gunslinger that looks like its done 5 world tours ( think Eddie van halen frankenstrat)..and its relic looking only real rather than pretend wear....the old tone wood thing ....eddie van halen one of the world's greatest tonechasers....played mostly new guitars...especially from his Ernie ball...Peavey...EVH era...and he didnt give a hoot....my take is... relics do look cool....cmon a battered looking butterscotch tele....and whos got a spare 40 years to get that vibe....but a good guitar is a good guitar....and either way its in the fingers....i wonder if anyone has thought of relicing amps and effects pedals lol...ripped speaker cloth...torn vinyl...ect
