Hey one Tipp for the casheer. If its to fast slow down dont play the game. Take you time and if someone say something like faster just move on packaging and STARE THEM DOWN... they will be quiet believe me. I do it and i love it 😉😂

The cashiers in Germany are insanely fast, and there is no one who is packaging your groceries for you.
The best tip I have for all expats: get yourself a good collapsible box / Klappkiste. Place it in your shopping cart, and load everything into it.
The opening of such a box is much larger than any bags which makes placing your groceries into it much easier.
Then, at the check-out you can place everything back into the box again. Also, it gives you a much better appreciation for how much you bought already. Because you know your Klappkiste is already overflowing.
Opening times: in most larger cities many supermarkets are opened till 11 P.M./ 2300, some even till 12 P.M./00.00. Smaller supermarkets in cities also stay open till 9 P.M./21.00.

Attempting to learn the language of the country you are working in should be a given. It definitely will improve your whole life. It will open your mind. Because the more you learn the local language the more friends you are able to make, thus making your life more comfortable.

Like you said, most Germans will really appeciate your attempt to learn German.

I would not hire you if you would not convince me you intend to learn my language. Aside from that I would not care. These days I have lot of colleagues from different countries. Main internal language is German but in a 1to1 we often switch to English. So as you said: The willingness is the important thing, not how well you master it.
