I have no plans to daily drive PopOS but System76 has got some crazy features planned for new rust COSMIC desktop, features that I thought I wouldn't see on the Linux desktop any time soon

I left Solus around 2019/20 for PopOS and used it for over a year. Honestly loved it. Having an optimus type laptop PopOS made things "just work." Having updated kernels, updated nvidia drivers, and a steady stream of updates throughout each week was very nice. Bugs happened quite a bit, but nothing that a hotfix update couldn't resolve 95% of the time. It's always nice having the PopOS devs being active and engaging with the community via the PopOS subreddit.

I've since landed between a mix of Fedora and EndeavourOS so I don't see myself going back to PopOS, I wasn't a particular fan of the Cosmic layout, stock Gnome with a few key extensions is more than fine for my own workflow, but to each their own of course. I do hope PopOS is successful as it's always good to have other options on Linux, but for now I'm perfectly happy writing this comment from Fedora 37.

One thing I will most likely test drive on bare metal in the very near future is Vanilla OS. Essentially just a Ubuntu distro, without all the Canonical extras, but with an immutability aspect in mind. I don't really think that's my cup of tea since I like to edit my system easily and quickly, but I do find their work and their concept interesting nonetheless. Their Vanilla OS stable release is probably marked for end of December or early January, so might be worth setting up a video for that in the future! Just a little heads up & and as always thanks for the videos bro!

Man, every time I hear Cosmic news, I get more excited for when it’s fully-baked!

I run Pop Os on my main machine. And, I really appreciate all the thoughts and work that they had put on this project. I'm definitely looking forward to their new Cosmic environment specially because it's written in Rust 🤩🦀

I recently bought an HP Dev One because they are running a holiday deal (still running btw if anyone is interested, def not sponsored), and upon receiving it, I was thinking about immediately flashing a different distro than the OEM Pop OS. Then I learned the OEM has out of box firmware update service so I figured I can play around it for a day, and I'm quite satisfied with it, from the perspective of a user who daily drives an i3-wm Arch machine. The customization is def not as rich, but with the builtin auto tiler and some keybind changes (done in the builtin settings program), I can pretty much recreate my tiling WM workflow to work with comfortably. I'm keeping the Pop OS for now and I def look forward to the new DE update!

I'm not a fan of the GTK style that Cosmic is inevitably going to try to emulate or generally be similar to, but I do really hope a lot of the code they write works with other things as well. While I'd not personally use a DE that looks like anything GTK or GNOME, if System76 can get HDR support that can be integrated into other DE's that's good for everyone.

As long as they support dynamic applets, like ones that preview video, you can technically run Doom.
I hope they do. Arbitrary limitations on systems like docks are stupid.

I've settled on pop!_os as my daily driver. I love it, can't wait to see full cosmic DE. Somebody mentioned how pop!_os is a bit buggy now, can't say i noticed that.

I'm from the future and we just got fractional scaling for GTK+7!! 🎉 Love the work that the GNOME team has put into this! All the centuries of debate, unnecessary Wayland vs Inspire arguments, and rogue developers were definitely worth it ♥

I still run Gnome on Inspire though… I prefer their X11 roots 😌 not to mention Inspire supports awesome-wm 108.32.1583.ge281fa3a3-1 and other tiling window managers that used to run on X11

I keep my fingers crossed for the pop os team because as a Linux community we need such a successful initiative. Especially as Wayland's general progress and adoption disappoints, it started at 2008 and is still mostly unusable. So if we wish Linux to be reall alternative for macos and windows and "common daily driver for the masses" we need DE and WM which benefit from bleeding edge technologies and hardware.

nvidia is very possible as they added a lot of improvements in 525 :
* Completely fixed electron apps in Wayland
* Fixed some screenshare bugs
* Added to support for native VRR (G-Sync on wayland, and without needing nvidia-settings)
* and a lot of bug fixes

Will extensions be iced popsicles? It actually sounds interesting, definitely worth a look down the track. (I’d assumed I was going to be a huge awesomewm fan and to my chagrin I seem to spending most old my time gnome. I’ve probably been irredeemably corrupted by my time on macos!)

I have been wanting HDR for Linux for ages. It is the main reason why for games that have HDR, I boot to Windows.

Dude, I have to give you kudos. I feel very often lost with the COSMIC DE news, and I appreciate you putting out these updates.

most likely not gonna switch to pop, but insanely interested in using or at least testing the cosmic DE at some point nonetheless

I happy about it being based on smithay so I can steal code for my compositor >:)

This journey of creating a new DE is more challenging than I imagined.

I've been running Pop!OS on wayland for about 3 months now and I was all but about to give up on the fractional scaling issues it had (it was even worse in X11 using Ubuntu 22.04), but this announcement has given me hope that I can finally get some hope! I have confidence that this team will knock it out of the park, and I absolutely cannot wait to see what they can do in the HDR world. I also dual boot just to play games that I want to use HDR on in widows btw, and I hate it. Windows has the worst options for setting up HDR so I would love to see how open and available the API will be for use with HDPI/Fractional Scaling and HDR all combined onto my 4k TV! :)

I'm also waiting to see what they'll develop and how it will improve our experience and performance,
but I'm hopping they'll not change much the appearance from what is now, from what I saw I prefer how it looks now for the most parts.
