Advanced analytics have become prevalent in the NBA since Moneyball existed primarily by turning to the three-point shot more instead of mid-range. Today I explain why the box score is misleading in multiple ways and how advanced analytics tell a better story than the box score. This was a great analysis. I'd say advanced analytics are useful, but shouldn't be the end-all, be-all factor when determining how good a player is.

People often misuse analytics. Analytics isn't just numbers. Its numbers+context. Ben Taylor from Thinking Basketball is one of the guys I see that properly uses analytics in basketball. Numbers don't lie but can be used in the wrong/misleading context.

maan amazing content. I'm a hooper and a nba fan but watching your videos make me realise how little I actually know about the game. Keep up with the work King. Your channel will blow up

Heres the thing.. you can have the 5th best Offensive rating, but be first in pace by a lot. That would be the best offense. Basically, if you're slightly less efficient but play much much faster.

One idea I’m surprised wasn’t explicitly referenced, is that maybe the opportunity for a player to be clutch really only exists when they’re already having sub-par shooting performances.

When a team is shooting REALLY REALLY well…they’ll likely be winning by more than 5pts at the end of the game. In decisive victories there’s no opportunity for a player to be this definition of clutch. So for a player to “clutch all the time, ” is analogous to always redeeming yourself from mistakes. When what should be technically more desirable is to not make mistakes in the 1st place.

If I’m overthinking this feel free to enlighten me. I’m genuinely curious to whether or not there a metric that takes this concept into account?

man thank you people always bring up fg percentage when talking efficiency and i'm like that's so dumb they're not the same. if we both take 10 shots and you make 5 all layups and i make 4 all threes, i score 12 you score 10 and your fg% looks better compared to mine (50 vs 40). even if i took 9 shots i would have a smaller fg% but scored more points on less shots so how can you be more efficient?

I’d say the artist to steal more important than any analytics. Stats can be manipulated by the players in any given point in time in the players that are really good know this. Hell Isaiah Thomas said it on NBA open court. You have great players were able to impact the game without ever putting any numbers on any stat sheet. Just saying Analytics never account for that.

Something else analytics never taken to consideration is matchups. Especially when you start talking about analytics throughout the course of a year

Jokic is better passer than rondo. 👌
I love Joker too but let's be a bit more objective

Just gonna say as a rockets fan, harden is a inefficiant volume scorer, who also forces his teammates to stand still and do nothing. Causing stagnation. Most importantly, analytics are great for 82 games, and are basically useless in a 7 game sample size and even worse in a 1 game sample size.
