Driving the 4 Cylinder C63 - You Don't Deserve the Badge

Finally, the fateful day is here! #C63 S E Performance driven on the windy roads of Malaga in Spain. No excuses of unfinished software, production vehicles, or anything else: today, truly is judgement day for the new four-cylinder hybrid version of our favourite #AMG.

I will first recount the history of the name, because today’s topic is of Identity. Mercedes might remind you of the 190E that Senna made famous on the Nurburgring, another 4 cylinder super saloon. But the legend of the real C63 truly begins from the W204 series and it’s 6.2 litre mega engine - a naturally aspirated unit also found in legends like the SLS AMG and the GT3 racing cars. Ingrained in my memory is Jeremy Clarkson coming up behind Richard Hammond in the ax murderer with headlights, something that left a huge impression on my young mind. Years later, I’ve now owned 12 of these incredible mg machines. Headlined by the 506 and C63 Black Series - this was the first step, and a hard act to follow. Despite our fears of turbocharging, the W205 proved to be an incredible car with superb sound, particularly in low speeds. The C63 Coupe stands out as the best, with a unique body and epic handling.

This one is totally different. No RWD, No V8. It’s a 680 BHP 4 cylinder engine, aka the M139L First found in the A45. In here, that engine is switched longitudinally, and we add to it the MGU H electric gas turbocharger from the AMG ONE, with a big AMG performance battery and an electric motor on the rear. This is the so called P3 hybrid system.

The 0-60 is claimed at 3.4seconds - I absolutely smashed that figure, as you’ll see! We also have to talk about the Boost mode, and why it’s strange. Plus the big implications of power to weight ratio because of boost mode.

Up next on on RBR is the new RS4 Competition first drive, and then a surprise AMG video! Subscribe to support us and see them first. :)

The badge is in my pocket. You can have it back when we get a V8 back, AMG! 🥲

I think the engineers got too caught up in making a technically competent car but forgot that real Amg owners always bought these cars for the emotive and fun element

Let’s be honest, traditionally, the drivers choice was the the M3, the best daily was the RS4, but if you wanted a monster, you went for the C63s. The V8 was the main reason you bought this car, it was what made it unique and unlike anything else in the segment.
Also, making a car so much heavier, surely that is not the most environmentally friendly option, especially since the process of making and then disposing of the batteries etc is awful!
I dread to think what it’ll be like to run when it’s out of warranty…..

It'll be hard justifying getting the C63 over the C43.

Thanks for being bold and telling it like it is. Lots of sugar coating around this car. The emotion has always been the reason to own a C63. If regulations are forcing you to remove that emotion its not the same car. It can't be. Not knocking this tremendous engineering feat but call the car something else. It isn't a C63.

The problem of the last years is: First they swapped quality for marketing and service for digital toys. Then they transformed regular cars to an „AMG car“ (A35, C43, E53). And now they change proper AMG cars to regular cars with AMG Badge.

Sad times for AMG lovers, sad times for good big engine lovers!

You are Spot on. Kinda reminds me of a few years ago when VW replacing the fantastic VR6 from the Golf R with a 4 cylinders. Smoothness and sounds were gone and I defected. Same thing here. I had the original 6.2 C63 and that new 4 cylinders hybrid is a sure way of losing dedicated customers. Cadillac cts-v blackwing anyone?!?

Very honest judgement and a realistic summary of this car. Thanks for that Raz!

Glad you came to this conclusion. As a C63s owner, we all know this isn’t a C63. Hopefully AMG aren’t too angry at you, and if they are the V8s are gone anyway!

Two biggest worst parts are that it has a stupid weird lag when you’re just coasting and go full throttle on the gas. Second also is that if the battery is on low charge you get only 480hp. I would rather have the V8 bi turbo at that point with all 510hp all the time.

This makes me sad. The first time a C63 has ever invoked that emotion from me. Long live the 6.2 and even the 4.0 TT. U never realize ur in the good old days until they’re gone.

As an owner of a the last V8, I saw this coming. I agree with you it should not have the c63 badge. The looks of this car, they should have have given us 1 last V8. But the good thing is my C63 will increase in value

For me, AMG is all about the experience. Im not talking about lap times, nor how much G-force it can handle in corners. I dont care how fast it goes from 0-100km/h, neither do I even worry about the fuel economy.

A real AMG 63 has always been that one special car in every class of MB, the one car that always felt special from the moment you start the engine. It doesn't care about your lap times, it eats rear tires like there is no tomorrow, it literally burns money converting gasolin into loud explosions and it makes a sound that gets every other car manufacturer envious.

The new C63s E Performance sure is a great piece of engineering, it's faster, it's more nimble, it's more advanced. But in the process of achieving higher numbers, it has lost its identity, its heritage, its soul.

With tears in my eyes, I say goodbye to the V8s. I don't hate you dear young blood, I just hoped the good old days would have lasted a bit longer.

Sincerely

A real C63 owner

It’s a sad day! & When, not if, this thing goes wrong, it’ll cost a fortune to fix the complexities

Thanks for your non biased honest review!
It is very sad Mercedes is pushing us either buy a bigger much more expensive vehicle to have the V8 or switch to another brand to have an authenticate sports car.

Anyways never thought the day would come that my CLS 53 AMG would sound better than 63 AMG..

Nobody bought a C63 because it was the fastest option…since it never was. They bought it because of the engine. That’s it. So this new car’s party trick is power and they’re betting on an entirely different customer base. Might work, might not. Happy I was able to own a W205 while I still could.

Will people be prepared for pay 90+ k for just 4 cylinders though? Especially as you can get an M3 or RS5 for similar money? I wonder if the SL43 will have the same problem too, 100+ k for a 4 cylinder sports car seems too much.

Valid point on the Clarkson C63 video. That video took the car to the top tier.

To be honest it doesn’t sound as terrible as I thought it would. Sticking with my W205 C43 though, that V6 sounds fantastic
