Minor Scales - Natural, Harmonic, and Melodic

The natural minor! The harmonic minor! The melodic minor! Like, why do we even have them?

This lesson isn't too hard, but you'll need to know what intervals are (like whole step, half step, etc.) and you'll need to have a basic idea of what a scale is.

These aren't strictly necessary, but can be helpful:

00:30 Natural Minor
03:55 Harmonic Minor
11:02 Melodic Minor
14:14 Cat

I don't know why it is that music theory is often made so complicated. The way you teach it, it obviously doesn't have to be. Thank you so much!!

These videos are FINALLY managing to get some music stuff inside that was always being a pain. You explain simply but it's all very correct and precise. Never a confusing sentence. Great, man, thank you very very much!

My piano teacher always said I had talent, but I ignored all the theory. Your lessons have really helped fill in all the gaps I created with my laziness. This lesson especially helped me to understand why I like the minor scale and its various incarnations more than the major scale. It also helped me to understand how some of my own music ventures never felt catchy or creative enough while trying to use minor scales. Thank you so much.

I love how this explains so easily- no useless jargon just straight to how to use these minor scales practically.

For some elaboration on why its called "natural", a natural minor scale is constructed out of the same notes as its relative major scale, but starting on the major scale's 6th degree.
E.G. in the key of C and A minor respectively,
C D E F G A B
A B C D E F G
Likewise, with, say, an A major and F# minor scale
A B C# D E F# G#
F# G# A B C# D E
I hope this gives some clarification, as michael sort of skimmed over that a bit

As a newbie way in over my head, the fact that we use a different path going down than going up in a scale is mind blowing. I never would have guessed. Great video, cool cat.

Best music theory videos on Youtube. I've played guitar for 30 years, and am trying to teach myself piano. You have explained things that I've been stuck on for years!! Thank you so much.

Finally someone explains the switch from melodic to natural. This always confused me.

A lot of videos just seem to regurgitate music theory and try to make you memorise them, but I find your videos a lot more helpful because you use great examples to illustrate your points. I hope to understand music theory better so that I can play the guitar rather than memorise songs.

I can probably count in one hand how many times I’ve commented on YouTube videos. But I just gotta say this was the best explanation of minor scales I’ve ever seen/heard in my life.

I now realize I've been naturally drawn with my music towards the melodic minor sound and also know now why in my head it felt so preferable over the natural minor. This knowledge makes it a lot easier for me to play and move around with these minor scales. Thanks a lot, very well explained!

I have been a music producer for four years, and watching your videos made it easier for me to try new genres. I started with only making electronic music, but thanks to you I can now make classical and jazz songs!

Very much appreciated. If only all theory was presented in context of WHY such and such a thing is so then learning would seem relevant to practice instead of arbitrary and dislocated. Great lesson!

Very informative and I’m glad I watched all the way to the end, as a cat lover, watching your kitty stand on your keyboard, knock over your camera and then meow in to the mic gave me a good chuckle.

Amazing video! Can't believe this is 7 years old haha. I tend to be more visually oriented and those visual representations for the scales are incredibly useful. Thanks so much!

You are a natural music teacher, most clear, lots of info can be hard to grasp, but being clear and concise is your star quality for me.

Having an understanding of intervals helped me to discern the difference of the natural, Harmonic and Melodic minor scales using your lesson here!
