Baklava is the strudel's ancestor. Phyllo dough used to make baklava is named after the greek word for "leaf" since the dough needs to be "as thin as a leaf."

I had a wonderful friend in college named Rema. She was Arabic and her dad had a restaurant. She used to bring me all kinds of food and desserts like Baklava. It was heaven!

This is why I don't complain about bakery prices. I've tried to make baklava once (with pre-made filo dough) and it was still so time-consuming and the dough so delicate, I couldn't handle it properly. Like I'd pay my $2.50 and enjoy it.

We went to Tarpon Springs and the first time tasting it my sister, our friend and I were fighting for the last bit. We finally brought it home and shared it. We love Baklava.

"The batch is drenched in boiling sugar syrup and it's ready to eat'. Wrong info. The baklava needs to come down to room temp so that the filo is crunchy and easy to bite thru. When the boiling syrup is poured over it, the filo becomes very chewy and not easy to bite thru.
