As the U.S. celebrates Juneteenth, there is still disagreement over proposals for reparations for African Americans following generations of systematic injustice at the hands of local and federal institutions. Justin Hansford, a commissioner for the National African American Reparations Commission and law professor at Howard University, joined CBS News to discuss.

Reparation is a debt that is owed for the atrocities of enslavement that should have been paid a long time ago, 40 acres and a mule originally. This atrocity will never be forgotten until this debt is paid.

Why it a conversation for non blk communities when in regards to FBA reparations where there was no “community “ input in regards to anyone else in the USA? Not for illegal immigrants at the border, not for A sians w their hypothesis on expected crime increase from Covid, not for Ukraine, J ewish, nor the Japanese! So WHY the difference for FBA?

Imagine how wonderful this country would be if they never decided to bring them here. Just imagine how much of a reduction in crime there'd be.

Democrats owned slaves so they should pay. My ancestor lost his life in Tennessee in the Civil War. Who’s going to pay for his loss?

Unconstitutional and they know it. Leave the past where it belongs.

Point of interest. California tried to pass a law allowing reparations, but it was impossible without repealing laws against discrimination. The people voted NO to ending state laws against discrimination through the state.

Think about what you're asking for in the name of equality.

I was born in 1981, why should I be held responsible for any of what happened in the past?

Many of the white population in the U.S. live in poverty, work two or more jobs, suffer from hunger. I am sure they should pay taxes for this? Well I do not like the current Supreme Court, but if they rule against reparations they would be correct. Why are the civil right amendments being ignored. For one thing I can hear it now if reparations are granted. Some will say, "this is just (no matter what the amount is) a small payment on a bill long over do". I am for government programs to help the poor. But just of the statement. How would a struggling poor white person feel when they cannot provide the basic needs for their family, but if you are black there will be help. As for the riots in Tulsa that was criminal acts and those should be treated by law enforcement, but of course most of the crimes fall under the statue of limitation dead line.

I understand where this comes from due to things like generational wealth, but this seems to take it a bit far. Why don't we just focus on helping ANYONE in poverty, not just a specific group? If reparations were to be made about slavery, it probably should have happened over a hundred years ago. And to be honest, they kind of did. The bloodiest conflict in American history, about half a million people died fighting in the civil war. For freedom.
