It is hype. Artfully crafted by gifted promoters - with rumours and misinformation being spread by drama-addicted folks with too much time on their hands - but, hype nonetheless.

Apple Music is requiring Atmos for its curated playlists, so a lot of major artists are doing stereo and Atmos mixes. Apple Music still accepts regular stereo mixes. They don't require an Atmos mix... you just won't get a song into one of their big playlists, which again matters for Taylor Swift but not for the rest of us. An Atmos mix requires a remix of the multitrack album, so a lot of pro engineers are making money right now remixing albums. Some of the Atmos mixes are great, and some are terrible hack jobs thrown together by the labels. Atmos sound bar systems are out there right now - they simulate ceiling and side wall speakers by bouncing sound off the ceiling and walls, and you use two bluetooth speakers for the back of the room. I'm waiting for prices to come down on those! Atmos has already been in theaters for years. This topic is too complex for a YouTube comment.

Also it’s not necessary until you can’t upload tracks commercially because they don’t accept anything but ATMOS mixes. That has starts already.
