Since we started using a paper currency, people have been trying to counterfeit/print money. However, counterfeiting money is very difficult due to the plethora of safety precautions the government takes. This video explains the various ways to spot fake money and how experts are able to tell the difference between counterfeits and real money. It also explains why you can't counterfeit/print money.

Sure it requires some expertise and equipment, but it isn't nearly as "impossible" as made out to be in this vid. Look around you, printing industry is everywhere, you might not know how a label on a beer bottle is made, doesn't mean it's some sort of super secret art or requires inaccessible tech. It too uses custom paper, often custom inks, some product labels use foils, textures, even holograms, none of the "security features" are really all that special in industry, it's quite a bit of work to organize and all, but nothing unachievable to organized crime. And it is done - often. It even gets done by state actors, North Korea has made superdollars and during WW2 bombing runs both sides also threw fake marks and pounds respectively. Making the bills is not the bottleneck - distributing them is, you need to inject them to circulation, get them from a hand that knows it's a fake bill into hands that doesn't. That's hard to do in quantity, you print ten tonnes of counterfeit notes no problem, but try selling them and getting one tonne of real notes in return. Now try explaining to taxman how you have a totally legit income source for all that sudden wealth. That's significantly harder than the print job itself.

It is not nearly impossible to counterfeit money that is such bullshit. If you want to counterfeit high quality fakes it's called an offset press, if countering were nearly impossible then the art itself would be virtually non existent.

The watermark is not composed of ink as is stated in this video. The watermark is created during the paper making process and is caused by variations in the density of the paper. The watermark is actually part of the paper and does not involve ink at all. This makes it hard to counterfeit because the counterfeiter must be able to create paper with variations in density.

Although I obviously dont have 1st hand experience doing this, it isn't as hard as it is made out to be in this video. If you want identical bills that will pass banks machines and atms and self checkout machines, yeah sure it's nearly impossible.

But on small scale and giving money to regular gas station or retail employees, it only needs to be good enough. Jeff turner was a small, lone counterfeiter who went into some detail as to how he did it.

He glued two sheets of bible paper/scritta paper together as bible paper is about half the GSM of money, and is made from the same linen and cotton composition.
Bypassing photoshop restrictions are actually fairly easy, as all you need to do is make 2 or 3 cropped images and then import those seperately. Jeff also printed multiple layers via the printer to avoid printer restrictions.

For the water mark and security thread, all he did was print on the back of the obverse of the bill with trial and error to find the right opacity. Then he used a red uv pen to trace over the security thread. He goes into more detail if you look him up but it's definitely doable if someone had the will to do it.

The reason he got caught is because one of his drug dealers he got drugs from snitched on him and because he only made $100 bills which puts him under more scrutiny everytime he makes a purchase.

The best way to counterfeit paper money would be, to swap out your fake money for real money that is about to decommissioned.
I think they've already made a movie about that subject.

You need a specific type of paper and the proper chemicals plus the designs and patterns which is very complicated

Sure it would be hard for any person or organization of people to pull off. But wouldn't it be fairly feasible for say, the russian government to invest in having the capability to mass print perfectly accurate bills? It wouldn't be a terrible idea if you're worried that your own currency might crash and burn, so I could imagine it could not only get a ton of funding, but would also certainly be able to resource the expertise and materials to do such an operation.

I wonder what would happen if the US found out another country was counterfeitting bills perfectly. Technically there would be no way to tell since they'd not only be identical, but we still have old styles of money in circulation so you'd be able to use that money forever since they aren't going to outlaw other old style "real" currency.

It's not that it's impossible, it's more like if someone gives you a stack of money they may put a few pictures of money in there.
