The international standard on what's an "acceptable" amount of counterfeit bills is typically 100 per million notes in circulation. Based on this, considering how much US currency is in circulation worldwide, your chances of encountering a counterfeit note is exceeding rare. You have a much better chance of your credit card being used without authorisation or getting a bad check.

All money including legitimate money is not backed by the gold standard anymore so it is basically paper with a promise and you are basically accepting something worthless as having worth when it doesn't.

It only becomes fake money once someone turns it in. My job takes it still and makes sure that is the 1st change to customers. So it worked just like real $$

I'll give you two that most people do not know about... make sure the bill is a bit straight and then fold it in half so one half is flapping slighty in the air, if the floating side of the bill follows a magnet, it's legit. The ink in the bills (even OLD ones) is attracted to magnets (probably contains iron). Last but not least, take a white peice of paper and take your bill and swipe the collar of the president (where the ridges are) across the white paper, it should leave ink on the white paper and sometimes even see the individual lines from the ridges on the president's collar. I work with cash money so I know those 2 tricks that were not mentioned in the video above. Hope it helps someone some day.
