Показать описание
There is a story that is usually told about extremely successful people, a story that focuses on intelligence and ambition. But a lot of people work hard and some don’t get successful. They wake up early, go to the gym, eat well - do everything right and still…. No success. Why is that? That’s the question we’ll be answering today.

Here’s a player roster of the 2007 Ice Hockey team: “Medicine Hat Tigers”. Notice anything strange? For some reason, an incredible percentage of these men have been born in the months January, February, March. 56% to be precise. Statistically, it should be around 25%. 3/12 months. Hmm. curious right?
It's simply that in Canada, the eligibility cutoff for hockey class is January the 1st. The boy who’s birthday is January the 2nd will be the oldest in his hockey roster and if he’s playing with someone who’s birthday is December 31st, he is almost a year older than him. If they both start at 5 years old and the older player is now 10 years old and the younger 9, the older player will have 20% more experience than the younger kid. Just by being lucky with his birth date.
Bill Gates.
Bill switched schools to go to a private school in 7th grade, right around the time the school started a computer club funded by the local “mothers club”, the computer cost 3000$. It’s 1968 and most colleges didn’t even have computers. But the money ran out, no more access to the computer.
As luck would have it, a mother of one of Bill’s classmates was a founder of a new computer centre. And Bill was allowed to test out their software. At least, until that company went bankrupt.
After that, he got lucky again at the University of Washington which let him have free computer time in exchange for working on a piece of software that would automate payroll.
A little later, In college, Bill went to Bonneville for an independent study project where he spent the spring writing code, and who happened to be there? a man named John Norton who taught Gates coding more than anyone he would ever meet from that point forward. So what’s the word? Timing.
Bill and his luck had great timing. Didn’t mean he didn’t work hard, but he got lucky time and time again.
The Beatles
Now let’s move on to the Beatles. In 1964 the Beatles first came to America. But Lennon and McCartney first started playing in 1957. They were playing in Liverpool and they met this entrepreneur who invited them to play in Hamburg in strip joints.
The band played 7 days a week for five or more hours a night. In 18 months, they played more than 270 nights together for 5 hours straight per night. Now, what was so special about this? Simple. They got an immense amount of practice. Way more practice than musicians would get over in the UK. Those musicians were lucky if they got up once a week!
So what are the main ingredients of these stories?
Luck, Timing, Opportunity, Practise
So what’s the lesson here?
Yes, There luck involved in success. Absolutely. But so is hard work. Luck is out of your control so it shouldn’t be your focus. Hard work is in our control, so let’s focus on that.
The only thing we can do is recognize "opportunity" and try to anticipate lucky situations so that we’re prepared when something comes up. That way we fabricate a little of our own luck.
What is that saying again?
Luck is when opportunity meets preparation.
