I’ve been using a naked portafilter with my La Pavoni, Europiccola for about a year now. With your help and others, on line, I rarely have channeled shots anymore. I put 15g of my own roast into my Rocky Rancillio burr grinder then directly into a small glass former yogurt container. I use one of those fancy rosewood handle declumpers, with a coffee funnel, pour into the portafilter., even out with an OCD knockoff, then tamp with a 25lb preset automatic tamper (which I rarely tamp to 25 lbs), place loosely in the La Pavoni, pull the lever almost to the top, tighten than pull the lever all the way up, wait for the first few drops, do a modified Fellini, start the timer for 30 seconds. and pull the shot at 8-9 seconds. I’m getting perfect shots every morning!

By the way, I always use a milk thermometer when I’m frothing milk. There’s an ideal temperature (140F), that brings out the sweetness in the milk.

Guaging by the amount of time you’re steaming, milk in the videos, I doubt your milk temperatures are over 120F.

Never let milk sit in the steam wand!

Kelly: I did it...thank you for your video. I fixed three cups of espresso (one for our son) and absolutely no channeling at all. I was totally surprised. I have the bambino plus, used the distributor with tamping on one side and the dosing sifter. Made my day.

using Cafelat Robot, as basket already deep here, I only need to invest on DIY WDT (puck rake) you mentioned here... fabulous... no donut extraction detected.

Hey Hoon, great vid. Can you show us the difference using the same basket? You used the standard basket in the first shot. Then changed the basket and the technique. Do I need the basket, the stirring wand or both?

I think the pro is the way to go with it's ThermoJet looks way faster on frothing milk and the ease of using the screen adjustments, one question I have Hoon is if you using a better grinder like the Niche going to make a better coffee on the Barista Express or is so close most people (like me, new at using non pressure baskets), really taste any difference, I like Latte's and Americano's Thanks for any help, keep up the good work :)

Hi Hoon! Thanks for the video and an unedited look into the process. Wondering why you used a WDT tool (distribution), then tapped on the side (more distribution), then tapped on the counter (more distribution), then used a distribution tool, then tamp? I’ve seen a few you tubers do this, but it seems counterintuitive to distribute over and over with diff methods. I’m a noob, so just trying to understand the philosophy behind the process.

a bottomless portafilter should be used period. And never use a Breville, they are for amateurs
