ŞUŞA/ՇՈՒՇԻ (KARABAKH) - On February 22, 2023, I visited the region known internationally as Nagorno-Karabakh, the site of two wars between Azerbaijan and Armenia since 1992. At the time of my arrival, a protest (often described as a state-orchestrated blockade by international media) was ongoing on Lachin Road - the only road connecting Armenia to their ethnic communities in Nagorno-Karabakh (which Armenians refer to as "Artsakh" - names are tricky here!).

The protest was on its 72nd consecutive day, leaving the Armenian population of Stepanakert (Khankendi) cut off from the outside world, with the exception of sporadic Red Cross convoys transporting individuals in and out. I visited the protest site to get a closer look at what was going on.

The Lachin Road is a protected space in accordance with the 2020 Trilateral Agreement brokered by Russia, which ended the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh War and handed control of the road to a Russian peacekeeping force. Azerbaijan's presence on the road is, therefore, seen as a violation of the ceasefire agreement and... not a good sign for peace prospects in the region.

Shusha is not disputed territory. It is not disputed by any country (maybe except Armenia which is understandable) international body. Shusha and all of Karabakh including former Autonomous province of Nagorno Karabakh is recognized as a part of Azerbaijan. This was confirmed in UN resolutions as well.

they are not trying to expel Armenians from NK to go to their home country because NK (Artsakh) is their home country.
