We needed a cheap, economical car to scoot around town with so we weren't hogging the streets with our giant camper and 8 mpg's. So this corolla seemed like the perfect fit! It's a 1996 Toyota Corolla DX with 323,000 original miles.

Be easy on the throttle, the engine has just finished breaking in

A friend of mine purchased his new in '96 and now has well over 600, 000 miles on it (it's a 160 mile, round trip, five days a week "work car"). He too has spent a LOT of money over the years on changes but the car just won't die!

I’ve got a 96 with 505, 000 plus miles. Same motor never rebuilt. You got a bargain. Never get rid of it.

300, 000 miles ? That’s just starting to get broken in for a Corolla

The AE100 Corolla is called the "baby lexus" for good reason. Peak Corolla imo

That’s so crazy. I had a 91 Corolla with 321k miles. I bought it from a coworker for $125. I drove it for a couple months and sold it for a few hundred. I still see it on the road from time to time. They are great cars

I had one of those about 10 years ago. Jump started. Battery’s dead. Stopped to get gas. Left it running. Drove it 40 miles home. Parked. Turned it off. Click. Click. Click. Bought a new battery. Drove it about 6 months and sold it for $300 more than I had in it. Great bulletproof card.

These old Corollas had the 1.6L 4AFE engine usually. It’s an extremely reliable non interference engine

I bought me a 2000 toyota corolla with 250, 000 miles at a car auction for $500. It had a loud noise when you started it like a rod was knocking or something but it turns out it was just a bolt lose on the power steering pump. 30, 000 miles later and it's still a great car.

Every Toyota needs to have a good working a/c so it passes Scotty Kilmer’s test

Now you need a tow dolly to pull behind your truck/camper. and if it breaks down, just leave it on the roadside.

We took care of our 1996SC1 Saturn coupe and it had 330, 000 miles, we had it since 80, 000 miles, and two years ago it was in a car accident, still ran perfect though, but had to part ways, best car we’ve ever owned, and we had it for 12 years

They last forever . 300 m is nothing for them

You can’t beat that for $500. You know relative to other cars at that price range this is terrific.

I swear old cars last longer than New cars.

One of these is ALWAYS worth $500, I've bought at least 5 of these and I just bought an 88 for $200, these are the epitome of reliable!

Buying a cheap high quality car, taking good care of it, and driving it for decades is one of the ways to GET wealthy (i.e. comfortable to retire early and not have to worry about living expenses) for middle class people.

That is a great car, you always manage to find the best deals.

They also sold those are Geo prisms, same car different grill and usually even cheaper (although probably not in your case)... if I recall they had two autos available a three speed and a four speed. I think the 4 speed automatics got closer to 40mpg highway and the 3 speeds 30ish. The OD dropped the RPM a good deal on the highway.
