It’s not like they don’t want you to know.
They expose most basic settings to all users.
All other settings not used by many people are hidden under option key.
Try holding option key and clicking network, Time Machine, control volume. You will see lot more information.

it also works with volume too, just hold down the same keys as said and instead of doing the brightness key press the volume key to your preference of volume
