I’m happy they are making their tests harder to get a good rating. It’s meaningless if almost every car gets a good score in everything.

The structure held up well, the reason it's rated acceptable is due to "inadequate head protection" for the rear passenger.

I love how the test cart has American racing torque thrusts 2s on it

The rear passenger neck just snapped. 😢 Oof

Rav4 has the best body structure in this test (better than mazda) - reason why appreciate "acceptable" - head of rear passengers. If you almost every time ride in first row of seats - it's the best vehicle by this discipline in segment.

So Toyota didn’t do anything to improve the rear curtain airbags. Same thing happened in the 2019 model year.

Wonder how the RAV4 Prime with the floor battery would do.

This is a preview for the rest of Toyota’s and Lexus’s TNGA-based vehicles. Toyota definitely has the strongest structure (tested this far) with their highly regarded TNGA platform, but they have to work on their airbag coverage for rear passenger heads as well as likely the padding/insulation of the surfaces that the dummy strikes due to high pelvic acceleration.

Looking forward to seeing what the Camry and Lexus ES do. I’m guessing very very similar.

It would be good to know if the rear seat was in the reclined position (which it looks like) or the upright position. That upright position might improve things for the rear passenger with better contact with the curtain airbag. In any case Toyota need to improve the airbag to give better protection and avoid the passenger head sliding off and behind the airbag.

@IIHS Is this test applicable to the 2019 and 2020 models of the current generation as well?

The car is a tall tank compared to a 2000 Camry. The long nose has a heavy center engine subframe up sized from the previous generation Camrys, Scion tC, xB and RAV4. If you are driving a 2001 cavalier, it feels like a planted tank that gets slightly better mileage and is almost as zippy as a 2004 350Z. However it sets an inch or two too high off the ground and gets tail happy in the moose test. It's great for terrible urban streets and cutting up steep driveways. It has kind of a chopped top and decent cargo loading. They should have just left the cargo door like a van though because the glass will get smashed when you slam it on a large item. Not bad by far though

The floor looks slippery VS real road wouldn't that change how bad the damage will be?
