Toyota RAV4 (2019-2025): Rear Brake Service Mode. EPB Actuator Release. No TechStream!

In this video, we will show how to enable the dedicated Service Mode for the rear brake replacement/service in 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025 Toyota RAV4. Using the Service Mode will allow you to fully release the electric parking brake without any additional tools or software.

PRODUCT LINKS:

ENABLING THE SERVICE MODE:
1. Turn the key to the ON position. In the case of vehicles with a push start button, press it twice.
2. Pull the electronic parking brake button 3 times.
3. Push the electronic parking brake button 3 times.
4. Push and hold the electronic parking brake button. You will hear the motors located on the rear calipers of the RAV4 unwinding all the way.

If the above sequence does not work, try this sequence instead:
1. Turn the key to the Ignition ON position. In the case of vehicles with a push start button, press it twice.
2. Press the brake pedal.
3. Pull the electronic parking brake button 3 times.
4. Push the electronic parking brake button 3 times.
5. Release the brake pedal. The Park indicator on the dash should be flashing.
6. Push and hold the electronic parking brake button. You will hear the motors located on the rear calipers of the RAV4 unwinding all the way.

Now the parking brake is fully released and you can service your rear brakes. You will be able to push in the piston all the way without the electric parking brake holding it or do any other service on the brakes.

DISABLING THE SERVICE MODE (Before disabling the service mode, make sure that the rear calipers are fully reinstalled otherwise your piston may fall out!):
1. Pull and hold the electronic parking brake button. This will return the electric motor to the proper position. Wait until you stop hearing the parking brake motor noise in the back.
2. Pull the electronic parking brake button once to engage the parking brake. You are done.

The difference between using the Service Mode and simply pressing the parking brake button once to disengage the parking brake is the fact that in the Service Mode, it gets released completely allowing you to fully unwind the motor.

You have to hold the brake pedal when you’re pushing the button down to get the parking brake to release, then while still holding the button down lift off the brake pedal, then it’ll go into maintenance mode

Nice. You make it look a lot easier. Of course the dealer will not show you these things, at least mine didn't.

This isn’t accurate for a 2020 rav 4 atleast, you need to do the steps this says, pull up on the button 3 times, then push down 3 times, and then hit the brake pedal and push down for the 4th time pressing and holding, on the dash the park light will start flashing quickly - let go of the button, then repress the button and hold for a few seconds until you hear the epb motor releasing, then park on the dash will flicker slower and the light on the button itself will start flashing. Then to return out of brake maintenance mode, you pull the button up and hold and you will hear the motor retract back to regular position
