When I read the first book, I told everyone this. I told them who was John Snow's mother...although I did think she'd been R'd by Rhaegar. I said that the ice wall was really Hadrin's Wall. Historically, I couldn't name all of the countries that made up the Seven Kingdoms, but I could name five.

I am not disregarding GRRM's clever writing. He makes the old stories interesting. Just like JK Rowlings's combining the events of WW2 with Christian lore. Just like CS Lewis' accounts of the second Testament. Just like Roddenberry depicted the Cold War.

One day, visitors from another galaxy will find our planet in ruins. However, they will find these stories. They will believe we were wizards, rode on dragons, lions talked, etc. But our history will still be preserved...just in an even more colorful fashion than history is now taught.
