What happened to Elon Musk's Boring Company bricks?

What happened to the Brick Store? In 2018, Elon Musk annouced that the Boring Company would start a spin-off called The Brick Store. The excavated earth from digging the tunnels would be used to create earth+concrete bricks that would sell for 10 cents each. They would be free if used for affordable housing. But we haven't heard anything about them since...

I used and researched hydraulically compressed earth bricks in a house I designed and built in Western Colorado 20 years ago. It won Natural Home of the Year". The bricks were 25%clay and 75% sand. By adding 5% cement, they were waterproof. My engineer said I could go up to 3 stories without even testing them I produced them on site and worked everyday all winter. It's a good idea. The house is comfortable, fireproof and cheap.

Those tunnels are too inefficient to make economic sense. The number of passengers they can move is laughably low compared to even the most modest of subway systems.

He just invented a more poopy train. Imagine if they filled every one of their proposed tunnels with a train or metro, they would increase the traffic throughput by hundreds of orders of magnitude

The tunnels that barely fit a car, where you couldn't open a door and get out is frankly terrifying.

ah yes, cars in tunnels that move very slowly. the future is anything that isn't a train, usually some kind of "pod"

They managed to dig a smaller tunnel for the same cost as every other tunnel boring companies tunnels. Astounding, amazing, revolutionary.

Some technology being 5000 year old does not keep Musk from claiming that is his personal new invention....

You had me laughing when you said "Now this would normally be odd but we kinda expect it from Elon Musk". That is so true.

Elon Musk promising something that never comes out, gets drastically changed because his idea isn't feasible or turns out to be underwhelming or overpriced? Tell me something new.

Honestly, the tunnel concept was never impressive. Low speeds, nonexistent access for emergencies, and the required upkeep of cars which are notorious for breaking and needing to be entirely replaced... It sounds more like Elon was trying to invent demand for his sketchy cars.

We already have ideas for solutions to the traffic problems proposed - high-speed rails and mass transit + making cities walkable rather than coming up with new ideas for how you could use a car to go somewhere. We need solutions that take into account the root causes of issues like heavy traffic and pollution. Boring tunnels are anything but holistic.

"Cheaper, faster, and more efficient."

Turns out it was none of those things, they should have just improved buses.

elon makes all kinds of absurd claims and unrealistic goals. i wouldnt put too much stock into anything he says until it actually comes to market.

The large 2' x 4' concrete blocks are those used in retaining walls and temporary shoring for excavation. They have been around for years and are usually made with left over concrete. The batch plants keep the steel forms on site so if trucks come in at the end of the day with a leftover yard of concrete it does not go to waste

Those tunnels seem very tight and like they'd be difficult to do any maintenance in. If the car were to malfunction, I'm not even sure there'd be enough room to open the door to get out of the car. Also unless it's a self driving car that can manage all the twists and turns perfectly without needing to slow down, there's a very small margin for error- and seeing how some people drive on the highway.... mmm... I am not interested in these exclusive tesla tunnels-

I think it's putting the cart before the horses a little, making something so tight and assuming that the cars that use it (I'm assuming teslas?) will be okay, and not ever run into any problems and so on. Driving tunnels for big cities do SOUND great, but these seem just... idk I'm not so into them.

I think most people would need to be sedated to actually travel in those tunnels without panicking.

The tunnels are an utterly idiotic idea and I laugh at anyone who is fooled by them.

Chlosterphobic tunnels are great when your vehicle had a mechanical problem and you get stuck. No one can come get you and you can't open your doors. Also, there are no fire suppression systems in these tunnels so you better hope you don't have a mechanical that starts a fire.

I've already come to expect that at least half or what Elon muck says is either exaggerated or straight up vaporware

She said she did “some digging”... nice one. 👍

I think he found out his bricks are financially unfeasible and the state wasn't going to subisidize him, probably a deal feel though, for free bricks. No biggie. It was too good to be true.
